James Maghie's Grave
« on: Friday 07 December 07 12:43 GMT (UK) »

James Maghie was killed on 5 .8.1867

He and his family lived at Scotsby Cumberland

Can anyone help as to where James might be buried

I don't think there will be a head stone as James was the father of 10 children

I am not sure but I think the Church at Scotsby was built after 1867

Did you mean Scotby?

Apparently part of Wetheral parish http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CUL/Wetheral/index.html

If you search for Scotby at www.old-maps.co.uk the 1868 map has the Church marked close to the railway, so I guess there was a church there in 1867.

The first household in the 1861 census of Scotby was headed by (living at the Parsonage) ...

Geoff,

This looks great

I thought of having a day over that way and thought if I could get a plot number or some help I would try to find James's grave

As i say with 10 children there will be no headstone

I wrote to Scotby a few yeas ago ( this was for the marriage of James and Ann 1847) unknown to me at the time they ran away to Gretna , and I was told the church wasn't built then .

They are in the 1861 census and then in the 1871 census Ann is a widow in Carlisle .
I have all this and also James's coroners report and his death certificate

It would be nice to have a photo of his grave to finish the story off

Bob wish you could find him Grin Grin Grin Grin that would be great

Oh! It's nearly Christmas and I know the local copper so my time in questioning won't be as long.! So I'll give it a try but it won't be this weekend as the grandkids are coming and they seem to think I'm fairly normal. Undecided
I'm only doing it cos I dropped geoff in it the other day.

Perhaps if you were to start the trip in a canoe, you could "disappear" and be absolved from any further responsibility.  (Don't forget to take a supply of sandwiches.  You should also decide whether or not to tell the missus.)  Smiley

No you're not missing anything.  But I'm definitely not telling the missus anything. Why break the habit of a lifetime? Well 5 years!
It hasn't been that wet here Geoff to take the canoe. We live right on the river/bridge at Lanercost so we are fairly clued up on river levels.
I'll try to make it one morning this week on my way into work, Elizabeth, if only to work out the size of the graveyard and the state of the gravestones which was the problem at Brampton.

Sorry Geoff! Only just worked out the canoe reference!  It's been a hard day with the grandkids and my mother from the home and walking the dogs to entertain the kids - I'm claiming Alzeimers again.

We have minor flooding here around Tewkesbury, but nothing like July when someone was using a canoe in our street.

Although not a canoe, this was our street http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6Pvg5nPIXk

We juuuuust stayed dry - another couple of inches and we would have copped it  Shocked

Ooooh I know! We were living in Carlisle when the flooding happened. Luckily we are posh so lived on the hill (;>}), but down in the centre, they actually launched the inland boat of the RNLI.   The electric went off for 3 days as the main transformers for the town were next to the river. Then the mobiles all went off, I think to weight of use and I couldn't contact mother cos she's deaf and only had a loudspeaker phone dependant on the electric. The police station is still not usable and I would think half the houses affected have been sold. Probably to landlords for the new influx of students happening here.
Well must get back to Seaton Carew!

Elizabeth, it finally stopped raining and froze so I popped into Scotby this morning. Maybe you can tell from Geoff's photo but there are suprisingly few headstones and none that I could see before 1900. There were large area of spongy grass so there are obviously lots of graves under there.
Back at work I googled Scotby parish church and they have their own site with a contact us section so you could ask themselves if they have a cemetry plan. With your precise date it shouldn't be too hard if they still have the old records.
Sorry I've nothing more positive.
