That's me - 1963......
|
Hello, here I am again meekly asking for help! I have long puzzled over the location of two addresses which my great-grandparents lived at in Witton, Northwich. These were at Winnington Court (1891) and later Fowles Court (1901 through to 1936), both shown as being off Witton Street.
Now though I'm a native of the Northwich area, by the time I grew up a lot of redevelopment had taken place and many of these little "courts" or Witton Street had gone. So I am puzzled as to where they were.
I know I cannot visit the courts themselves, but when I'm next in Northwich I'd like to see the area where they used to be, and the point on Witton Street you used to access them.
If anyone can point me to a source of information, such as maps or descriptions, I'd really apprecite that....

Hi, According to Colin Lynch's book Northwich. Winningtons Court is now the site of the Plaza Bingo hall on Witton Street and Fowles Court was originally Perkins Place, a row of 11 properties between Witton Street and the Police Headquarters.

Cathy

Hi Cathy, that certainly fixes Winnington's Court for me! The old Plaza was still a cinema in my very young days, I can just remember going to see a film there.
Now for Fowles Court, I think I can picture where you mean.... If the book is referring to the "new" Police HQ, then there is the old Gladstone (?) Club around that point on Witton Street. I seem to remember all the original buildings are still in place there. So Fowles Court must have been accessed through a small alleyway between those buildings, I'll have a look when I am back in Northwich. My great-grandparents were at No.6 originally but spent most of their time there in No.11.
Thanks a million!! Now if I can just find an old map......
Garry

Hi Garry
You might want to have a play around on the following map:
http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/TwinMaps.aspx?township=EDT_306-2
I couldn't find what you want but you might have fun looking at all the different maps etc.

Hi "Doggy", I did forget to say "thank you" for that link to the old maps. Though it was not labelled, I could see Fowle Court on the map, from the position described earlier by "fishweb".
Cheers, Garry
