I am trying to find a record of the death of my g/g/grandfather Robert George PORTER. He was born in 1861 in Footscray, Melbourne, Aust to Robert PORTER (Born Somerset, England) and Margaret PORTER (nee O'CONNOR of Dublin, Ireland).
He married Sarah Elizabeth BROWN (Born Geelong, Aust) in 1886. Children William John PORTER 1887, Mabel PORTER 1890, Robert George PORTER 1892, Ada PORTER 1898.
1898 is the last trace I have of him. My 86 yearold great aunt states her grandfather died in a mining accident "up north" that is from Melbourne. She was unable to tell me anything else. In 1926 his son William George PORTER died in Melbourne. On the death certificate his father was listed as a "Mining Company Employee" and Williams wife listed his father as being Robert "Henry" PORTER . An obituary in the paper lists all the family including Sarah but not Robert? Both Robert and his wife Sarah have fallen off the face of the earth with not matching death certificates located for either in Vic or NSW?
If there is anyone who can provide any information on the death of Robert or even the birth / death of Sarah it would be greatly appreciated. I am sure there is an interesting story to be told.
Merry Christmas to all
If anyone could

Hi
Have you considered the following
PORTER Robert Father Unknown Mother Unknown UNKNOWN Age 54 Death Place Melbourne East Year 1913 Reg.No 2668
I have trawled through the death index for all Robert PORTERS and this is the only one that comes near matching his year of birth.
It may be worth while asking for a lookup from the Inquest Index for Vic - there may have been an enquiry into his death.
Cheers Cando

I'm making a list......

It appears that the Robert Porter who died in 1913 suicided with cyanide. Date of inquest was 5th March, 1913, no place given. Reference is 346.
None of the other 4 Robert Porters listed looks likely, I am afraid.

A little further info
Australian Electoral Roll 1903
PORTER George Robert 133 Pilgrim Street, Footscray Labourer PORTER Sarah Elizabeth 133 Pilgrim Street, Footscray Home Duties
Later years do show a Sarah Elizabeth PORTER in and around the Footscray area but the other names at the household do not appear to be this PORTER family.

Mystery Solved
Cando, Tropicalj and Deeiluka you have done it again. The Robert PORTER who suicided with Cyanide in Footscary in 1913 is my g/g/grandfather "Who died in a mine accident up north". I obtained the death certificate and although scant on detail all 5 children where listed and correct. No wonder my g/aunt was never told the truth. On top of that her mother Mabel PORTER died at the Ararat Asylum in the 40's. All very tragic but at least the truth is known. Now to get my hands on the Inquest papers.
Again you have been of great assistance in my family search and I thank you all. Sarah BROWN from Geelong is still a bit of a mystery but I will put that aside for now.
Regards STURDY - Merry Christmas to all

Hi Sturdy
I am pleased you downloaded the death cert to help solve the mystery. I had a bit of a gut feeling that it was him. I think it may have been you gt aunt's comment.
Sarah BROWN may have lived in Geelong when she was young and perhaps she thought she had been born there. I did trawl the indexes pretty thoroughly and she definitely was the only Sarah BROWN born in Victoria between 1841 and 1876.
I hope there is something in the inquest papers that gives you some understanding of Robert's actions. Very sad.
Season's Greetings to you.
Cando

Hello there
Glad you found the right chap even though the circumstances weren't good. t At least by then suicides could have a decent burial.
You say your relative died in an Ararat Asylum. This doesn't necessarily mean she had any sort of mental issues. My own ggf died in one but a lot of old people were also put in aslyums so they could be cared for they were not necessarily "madhouses"
kind regards Jenn

Hi
Re Ararat Mental Hospital [Aradale]-[Ararat Asylum 1867-1908; Hospital for the Insane 1908-1934; Mental Hospital -ct] - complete history at http://www.rootschat.com/links/02cw/ There is an index to patient records - partly opened to 1960. Your ancestor would have been diagnosed with mental illness to be in this particular institution. A bit more info
Marriage JONES William Gilbert b. NSW PORTER Mabel b. Footscray 1911 Reg No 3459
Birth JONES William Gilbert Father William Mother Grace Reg No 16467 1875 District Moulemein
Death JONES William Gilbert Father William Mother Grace MILLS Fitzroy Age 85 1962 Reg 7761
Had a search of some of the cemeteries and found both William Gilbert and Mabel JONES at Fawkner - http://www.fcmp.com.au/
I would imagine you would have all the birth registrations of Wm and Mabel's chn - if not just ask.
Cheers cando
