Hello listers, I have just discovered that my ancestor George Steevens of the Madras Artillery, was a native of Eversholt.
He and his family were Baptists and I am wondering if anyone who has done some research on Baptists in Bedfordshire could tell me what would be the best place to look for records.
I have a copy of the "Steevens family of High Wycombe" documents from the National Archives if anyone needs any info from that.
thanks for reading, Mark

Welcome to Rootschat
There are a number of Stevens on the IGI in Eversholt including a George baptised in 1806. You don't give any dates so I can't tell if he might be yours.
The nearest Baptist church seems to have been at Ridgmont, a couple of miles away - a transcription of the register is available on fiche from Bedford and Luton Archives and Records Service http://www.bedfordshire.gov.uk/CommunityAndLiving/ArchivesAndRecordOffice/Publications.aspx
You can also access their catalogue at http://blars.adlibsoft.com/
What else do you know about George?
Regards
David

Hi David, Many thanks for the links, I'll bookmark them and check them out.
I am pretty sure that the 1806 baptism entry is for my George Steevens. His entry nin the Madras Muster Roll gives his birth year as 1804. I do not yet have his exact enlistment date yet, but he arrived in Madras in 1821, so maybe he was economical with the truth in order to enlist. I expect firm answers to some of this stufff shortly.
His children were named Daniel, Robert, Hannah, Elizabeth, William, Ellen and Joseph. I have the transcript of the baptisms in Eversholt to 1812, and those names mostly appear, probably his brothers and sisters. His father's name (if the IGI entry is him, is Thomas, but this name has not appeared in the family since then.
Looking on the web, there appears to be a Baptist Church in Eversholt dating to 1400AD, so your comment about the nearest church is a bit confusing. Am I missing something?
cheers, Mark

I think you may be confusing the Baptist Church with the church of St John the Baptist which is Eversholt's parish (established) church. I don't think the Baptist faith was invented until the early 1600s
There is no mention of any non-conformist church in Eversholt on genuki - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/BDF/Eversholt/index.html

Ridgmont baptist church register has been extracted onto the IGI but there are no Stevens. But as the family seemed to baptise their children in the established church it may have just been George who adopted the Baptist faith

Thanks David, that is an intriguing possibility, perhaps when I receive George's recruitment details it will clarify this.
How good are the IGI records for Bedfordshire? I know that the India records are very patchy, at least the online version that is. Some later years are complete, others are registered as Iceland, many years have only girls names in the baptisms.
cheers, Mark

Beds on the IGI is about as good as it gets. Coverage pre 1812 is virtually complete, and the coverage 1813-75 is also pretty good, although there are gaps.
Baptists didn't go in for infant baptisms so presumably the Indian ones you are referring to are adult baptisms. They did record births though - as shown on the Ridgmont baptist church extractions on the IGI
