So close, but yet so far.
« on: Sunday 09 December 07 13:01 GMT (UK) »

I've been working on a very positive line for a number of weeks now, carefully going forward using the dangerous rule of probability.

Probability was working fine on this line for I was working on a rare surname (Rettie) in a fairly small dwelling (Parish of Monquhitter (Abderdeenshire)).

This line was going well from the first Rettie (b.1800) down to the last Rettie birth of 1716 all in the same small parish. I was getting fairly excited, because I was only 16 years away from breaking into the 17th century - the first time I would have done so on my own accord.

The man born in 1716 was a George Rettie (going by his christian name, I'm guessing the family were Hanoverian or impartial to Jacobitism) and his father was William. So I did a search of Wil Retties and variants for the whole of Aberdeenshire between 1675 and 1700...

Again I was excited to see 3 matches!

Unfortunately all three of them were William 'Raittie' (probable varient), all from the Parish of Monquhitter, born in 1678, 1679 and 1695 respectively.

So basically, it could be ant of the three of them. So close, but yet so far...

Thanks jinks.

I will look into it and see if I can get any more evidence to make the link.  Smiley
