Impossible Task
« on: Sunday 09 December 07 15:54 GMT (UK) »

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me, I would like to find the name of a young man back in 1914 thru 1919, that worked at the National Shell Factory in Grimsby.  He dated a Nellie ( Dolly) Watson, who also worked there.  The young man joined the Army and was in artillery, he unfortunately died in the war. I was hoping that maybe someone knew his family or the name of his family. I know there isn't anything to go by, that is why it is an impossible task. Sad  If anyone could point me in a direction that would be great.
Thanks Tdimmitt

Perhaps a letter/email to a local newspaper;  there might just be some relatives of Nellie still in the area who have information or memories.

If you google List of absent voters grimsby 1919 it may come up with name you will have to trawl the list but don't forget this is for voters so anyone over 21 do you know Nellie's age at the time

There are about 5 or 6 listed in artillery you could then cross refer them to the cwgc.org to see if the death is listed

It was in 1918 women were given the right to vote, and only for aged 30 and over.

Thanks for all the info, I will go and check it all out. It is hard when you don't know the young mans name, which is what I am trying to find.  But all avenues are worth checking out. Thanks to all Smiley

Not necessarily an impossible task, but a tough one indeed.

Here, for what it's worth, is a (sadly very long) list of Grimsby men who died in WW1 (see bottom of page for additional names): http://www.rootsweb.com/~englin/mem/grimsby.htm

It may be that some can be ruled out on the basis of age, force etc. or by reference to details on the CWGC site http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14

However, what would be really useful would be a list of employees of the National Shell Factory to cross- reference against this one.

Do you have any idea of even the first name/age/anything else at all about the man in question?

Hmmm... Wink

Anna,
No, I don't know the first name of the young man.  That is the hard part. And no one still alive in the family knows it either.  I am guess that his age might be somewhere around 19 to 21??
I was suppose to be getting a list of all who worked at the factory in Grimsby but nothing has come. So I guess I will have to write them again and see.
I will check out the sites that you sent and see what happens.  Thanks again. Smiley
