Joseph Leith - Belhelvie
« on: Sunday 09 December 07 16:24 GMT (UK) »

Trying to trace any information on Joseph Leith, Bridlefolds, Belhelvie.

What I know so far -
His son, Alexander Leith married an Elspet C (Crighton?) Mutch and had quite a few children My wife's grandmother amongst them.

Joseph was born in Peterculter, I believe. His wife was possibly Ann Wilson, but I don't know for definite.

Any help with parents, siblings, children most wecome

Cheers

Hello Jim

The IGI www.familysearch.org - has the following
birth:

Information removed due to copyright violation. See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/copyright.php for more details

RootsChat must deal with any breach of copyright by its members.

For some time the team of Copyright Editors has been removing breaches of copyright and sending detailed personal messages to the member that had posted the information.  Due to the volume of posts and members this is now impractical.  Messages in breach will simply be deleted and this notice posted.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused but are sure you will appreciate the importance of this issue.

Shall go and do a search for Joseph Leiths marriage on the IGI

Furthermore, noticed you live in Aberdeenshire, shall post here what is my standard post|.
_______________________________________________________________________
Use Rootschat to get as much information as you can.  As you'll find out people are more than willing to help.

1.  When Rootschat info dries up, and if you feel you need to do more exploring, the pay per view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  (SP), is well worth considering.  It's free to register.  Clearly highlights what records can be looked at and saved online.  There are some free search facilites. This website curtails online searches after certain dates.

2.  A second option.  A great money saver - Aberdeen Registrars Office (as do many others in Scotland), - has Scottish Birth Marriage and Death (BMD) records online going back to 1855 and up to the present day (for Scotland).  Charge £15 per hour.  An hour should be more than enough to get a good core of info.  I use them as I live locally and visit in person.  They can be contacted on 01224 522033 or e-mail:  Searchroom@aberdeencity.gov.uk  They're really friendly approachable and professional.  Will save you days and pounds ++ on Scotlands People.

3.  The IGI at www.family search.org - also has a certain amount of free family history records - well worth a look and  family history software.

4.  Aberdeen family History Society - the biggest? in Scotland - do a Google to find out their website and services they provide   :O)

Good luck.

Regards,   Steve   :O)

Well,

Strangely - this is where I hope another Rootschatter sticks their oar in as - the IGI has

children of Joseph Leith and Ann Wilson.  (but this is 'after' the ones in the previous reply.

Hello Joe

If the Joseph you found on the 1871 census is correct - this may be him on the 1841 - found on FreeCen (www.freecen.rootsweb.com)
- there are only 2 of the same name - but different ages and the other I believe is too far away.  I think we need for Jim to come back and explain the obvious anomaly.  Looks as though a couple of marriage entries will have to be sourced/purchased.

Well done again Joe,

Looks as though we've identified and followed the correct Joesph through - what do you think Jim?

Joe - the Alexander from your 1871 census followed through appears definitely to be our man which means that he was born in 1864 which is at odds with the Alexander Leith and Elizabeth Mutch which I initially found.

And lastly,

If the Alexander above is the correct Alexander - a free search on Scotlands People brings up only one Alexander Leith marrying an Elspet Mutch - Scotland wide between 1882 and 1900.  Takes place in Aberdeenshire in 1891.

Have no credits left to view.

Have a good day - got to get back to work  :O)  Steve

Once again, you guys have found the right man!

Here is what I started with.  My wife's Great-Grandparents are buried in a ruined churchyard on the seaward side of the Aberdeen-Ellon road. The link takes you to the Aberdeenshire website map -
http://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/local/map.asp?x=396926680&y=819615410&scale=5000

The Inscription on the gravestone reads-
"In loving memory of Alexander Leith. Died at Bridlefolds Belhevie 29th June 1921 age 57 years.  Also  His Father and Mother and his 2 children who died in infancy. Also his wife Elspet C Mutch who died 1st Feb 1951 age 82 years.   Erected my his widow and family."

We think the "C" is Crighton, but not 100% sure.

My Wife's Grandmother was Williamina Leith, born in 1908 & died in1983.

Joekar - Your 1901 census for Bridlefolds is spot on.
Piglet01 - The alexander born on 1 Sep 1864 seems correct as this ties in with his age when he died in1921, and also gives his parents.

Thanks very much to both of you.

Piglet01 - Thanks very much for the search information you gave me.  Just one question - where about in Aberdeen is the Registrars office situated?  Is it in St Nicholas House or somewhere like that?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm fairly new to all this research business!

Cheers
Jim

Hello Jim

Yes, it's in St Nicholas house, from the Upperkirkgate entrance.  If you follow the attached link, it will take you to a .pdf file which will explain all.

Good luck with your search.  They're very good and very helpful.

Thanks very much Steve.  Much appreciated.

Now that I have my bus pass, I can get into Aberdeen for nothing, so it looks like I'll be making a visit fairly soon, probably after the New Year.

I'm assuming that the best thing to do is to get a list of things you want to look up, book an hour, and see how far through your list you can get in the time.

Cheers
