I've just found a note that tells me Philip Woodham was a widower when he married Elizabeth Barker on 14 May 1843, & there is a daughter Eliza christened 2 Jan 1842 at M/E .  I cannot find his first marriage.

Burial of a Mary Woodhams age 35  at ME on 6 March 1842. But looking at 1841 she may have been the wife of Coats.

Philip 24 was in the same household as Philip and Eliza, with no sign of a wife, in 1841

In 1851 there is an Eliza 9 daughter living with Philip and Eliza

There's also a burial of Hannah age 18 on 8 May 1842, who may have been the mother of Eliza born Dec quarter 1841. Does your note of the 2 Jan 1842 baptism give her mother's name? If not you may have to invest £7 in her birth cert. There's time after Jun 1841 for Philip to have married Hannah, to have had Eliza in the dec quarter 1841, and for Hannah to have died in May 1842. The closest Hannah in ME in 1841 is Hannah Cox age 19. Pure unadulterated speculation!

But like you I can't find a first marriage of Philip

How about Bedford 6 43 Sept 1841 Hannah Bond/Boud and Philip Woodams

And there is a Hannah Bond 15 in ME in 1841

Not just idle speculation! (Actually it was, but it seems to have worked out E&OE)

David

Later: The marriage is on the IGI - extracted - at Carlton on 12 July 1841 Philip WOODOMS/Hannah BOND

Thanks David, for that piece of logical deduction, eventually anyway.

Tell the truth I don't really recall noting the parents at Eliza's baptism, must have found the later children & assumed they all came from same pair. It was not until yesterday I really compared baptisms against marriage dates. I will check next time I'm at Archives.

Interesting about the Cox name, as Philip's wife Elizabeth Barker says her father was a Thomas Cox, shoemaker.

Just checked at Archives, Eliza Woodham born 21 Dec 1841, chr 2 Jan 1842 (duely noted as Sunday 1st after Christmas) is daughter of Philip & Hannah Woodham, labourer.

Marriage at Carlton on 12 July 1841, of Philip Woodoms age 25 labourer to Hannah Bond age 18 servant, both residents of Carlton at that time. His father Phillip Woodoms, her father not declared.

Hannah died 4 May 1842 age 18, buried 8 May.

Eliza Woodhams went on to marry George Parrott on 1 Oct 1861, she was a minor.

Hi there,

I'd just like to say thanks for all the information you have on Philip Woodham.  You've done a brilliant job and helped me fill in some holes.  My family line descends from Charles Woodham, youngest son to Philip and Elizabeth.

Have a good christmas everyone

Hello 2nd cousin Linda,

(not that you are my 2nd cousin - you are another distantly related cousin of sorts named Linda)

Glad the information was of use to you.  I suspect you are the Linda I found on Genes ReUnited (funny I'm always finding Lindas  Wink ) regarding Eliza Woodham. I need to update my GrU tree with recently found information.

Regards John

Linda

Poor Philip died [on the 20th Nov 1844 in hospital] from burns after he had had a fit on the 15th of Nov.  It is recorded in the Turner Archives.

I expect you have this information - but if not please consult the Bedfordshire Archives online search site?

Hello, thanks for that Cathy,  I'm sure Linda #1 will be in touch.

There is also info on the BLARS site of other Woodham family members of Milton Ernest including Coates.

Also in David Newman's book 'The Importance of Milton Ernest' there is an extract from letters of John Turner of M/E to his brother in America in 1834 where he describing the households of the village ".... we will find Philip Woodham and his wife with their son Cotes & his little brats in their old home ..." .

Which ties in with what is recorded on the 1841 census, Philip & his wife Eliza, plus Coates & his wife Mary, plus their children (I mean brats)  Ann, George, Andrew & Isaac.

cheers John

Gosh, John...

I did think there was more on WOODHAMs [but no gaol records in the 19th C  Sad ]  So they were ''good boys & girls"  Grin

I had thought the name had came up in the past - but no Milton Ernest family called WOODHAMs in rootsweb [family trees].

It sounds awful so I hope 'Phil' was well sedated before he died and didn't suffer too much?  Strange how you hear of  people on the list and then they become almost your own family and you feel for them as if it happened yesterday?

Or is that just me?
