Dominic Mc/MacDonald - Does anyone have one on their tree?
« on: Tuesday 11 December 07 15:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone. This is my second request. I thought I would try a new tack.

Does anyone have an ancestor Dominic Mc/MacDonald who was a sailor?

He definitely lived in the Glasgow/Greenock areas and died before 1911. He may have been born c 1850 but possibly in Ireland and not Scotland.

Another definite is that he had a son James Patrick, my grandfather. He was a Roman Catholic so I don't know if this helps at all.

James came down to North Wales c 1908 so there won't be any mention of him in Scotland after that.

I live in hopes.

hi

when and where was the son born ?
the irish birth for the father could well be right
but if we can locate him/them on a census that would be a start
what about a name for the mother ?

Thanks for your help but this is why I was asking.

I have no more information so I just thought that I would ask if anyone actually has a Dominic on their tree.

JP was born in Greenock as far as I know in 1887.

No idea of his mother's name.

hi pal,

trying to help...

you mention that james is your grandfather, no doubt you have his marriage cert..his death cert and i must ask if you have his birth cert, which would be available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a price of £1.20.

if your james was indeed scottish, the birth cert will give his mother's name and the parent's marriage date.

Hi GeneGenius and joekar
there is only one James Patrick McDonald born in Renfrewshire
but it is in Busby also 1901 census of Busby has only one
tried a few ages in boxes and this person is 6 years old so birth date would be
between 1894-1895
there are five James Patrick McDonalds born throught Scotland
but sorry I dont have any credits at the moment to view them
if it was the right person census may give father and mothers names

Hi everyone and thank you. I have JP's marriage certificate but it is a Welsh one so the only info I have on him is that he was born c 1887 and his father Dominic (deceased) was a sailor. I don't even have his place of birth as the address given at the time of marriage was in Wales.

I know he came from Scotland because that is what my Dad always told me and also that he came from Greenock but I must reiterate that my Dad was four when his father died in WW1 in 1918 and all he ever knew of his father was what his mother told him.

I do have some informationoff Scotland's People but none of it ties up. For instance, there are only a few Dominics (Dominicks) and there is no mention of them having a son called James Patrick.

Clutching at straws but was just hoping that someone somewhere may have an ancestor called Dominic McDonald and had researched their tree thoroughly and with word of mouth experiences and knowledge.

I must have Scottish cousins, well 2nd cousins at any rate. I doubt very much if James was an only child.
