Hi  All,

If you have ancestors or you think you might have ancestors who were lost at sea when working as a fisherman on a trawler out of Hull then have a look at this site.
 http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/genealogy/download/lost_trawlermen.pdf

...which ends in '.pdf' indicating that the file is a 'portable document file'.

In plain English, this means that you will need to have a copy of Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed on you PC before you can view the file.  Acrobat Reader is a free download and you should be able to find it with a simple search, if it is not already installed on your PC.

Hi wobbly,

What a great link.  I have found 4 members of my family all trawlermen lost at sea from the port of Hull.

             Many thanks  kooly...

Hi Kooly
Just found this site and found an Uncle who was lost at sea in 1931.

Do you know of any similar websites that list men lost at sea on other types of vessels? I can't find any death record of my great grandfather who was a ship's steward and I wondered if he died at sea.
Regards

Hello, I have tried the web site about lost trawler men and I must be doing something wrong. I get the Hull web site, but nothing I can see listed about the trawler men. It's most likely me, not doing things right,  as I still don't know how to use this Roots site either. Help please.... Carole  Embarrassed

I don't know if you use Mozilla Firefox.  I do and I can't access the records as suggested by Wobbly.  Try this instead - I had already found this list before it was passed to Hull CC and found this is the easiest way of accessing it now.

http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/portal/page?_pageid=221,148677&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

There is also this way of getting into the fishing records.

http://prismdata.hullcc.gov.uk:8080/dserve/dserve.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Search.tcl

I was given that way of doing it plus the following instructions by the Senior Archivist at Hull CC when I couldn't access it via the usual website.

"Scroll down to fishing records which takes you to our web page and a link to the on-line catalogue again at the side of the page. When you reach the page explaining the catalogue you will probably have to scroll down to access the search button.

Once you reach the search engine type any text (i.e. surname) in the Any Text field and it should bring up a list of ships with the name you are looking for as a member of the crew. Click on the number at the side of the ship's name and it will take you to crew list. You should bear in mind that our lists commence in 1884 and finish in 1914 and that only the crew down to the fourth hand has been inlcuded on this database. When I explain that we hold 25,500 crew lists you'll understand why we could only go down to the fourth hand! If the person you are looking for is not on the database it doesn't mean he was not on the ships but it does mean it will be much more difficult for you to find them as you would have to look through all of the boxes of lists to identify him".

Good Luck

Hi everyone
I thought I was going mad when I found I had a reply to a request I hadn't made!! Then I realised ther was two Carole's making similar enquiries, but I still don't understand why it came as a reply to my letter as that was way back in Feb!!
But, I can tell you that I found records of my g.g.grandfathers death on findmypast website. They have  records of marine deaths and it meant me wading through them but it was worth it in the end as I found my grandfather had died on board the SS Woodville out in Africa. I was able to request a death cert from GRO, it was classed as 'export', and found g.g.grandfather had died of Malaria. It was interesting to note that his death was not recorded anywhere only in the marine records. Maybe this will help someone else - I hope so.

Hi Carole

Glad you found your grandfather's death on findmypast.  As far as I know the Hull Trawlermen deaths are purely of trawlermen who sailed out of Hull and died at sea, rather than anyone else who died on board a ship, as in the case of your grandfather.

I've found my great uncle on the list of trawlemen deaths, but oddly not his father (my g.gran's first husband), although it is said he too died at sea - I have my doubts about that one though.

Hi Liz
I found an uncle who had died at sea on a trawler, but luckily I had a friend who looked it up in the Hull library for me and he also found a newspaper cutting of the accident that was way back in 1931. I was alway told that I had two uncles lost at sea, but I have found out since that one of them died at home with a serious illness, so you can't always believe the family stories!

Thank you so much Wobbly - for giving this website, and Lizzie Not So Busy - for explaining it so well.   Grin

I was thrilled to find my husband's great grandfather Fred Lochner (and the family later altered the name to Lockner) career in it as a fisherman starting as apprentice to becoming a skipper, from 1885-1901 Grin Grin Grin

Now if I could just find out where he came from in Germany!!! Huh
