Parish Registers: GREEN and SKELLY
« on: Tuesday 11 December 07 16:28 UTC (UK) »

Hello, I'm new to this board so I hope I am doing this correctly.

Doing a search on my relations who came from Virginia, Co. Cavan.  I have visited the area and spoken to some older relatives and am now looking for documentation in order to establish authenticity.

I do have a copy of the certificate of marriage on my gt. grandparents:
Michael Green; Clonasillagh
Catherine Skelly
were married in the Church of Kilskyre parish, diocese of Meath on 14 April 1885.  Witnesses were Patrick Skelly and Margaret Nulty.

My grandmother's baptismal certificate reads:
Mary Green born 15 November, 1903 was baptised according to Rites of Catholic church on 21st day November 1903 in the Church of St. Bartholemew, Munterconnaught by the Rev. Francis McKiernan Adm.
Parents: Michael Green, Catherine Skelly
Sponsor: Anne Kavanaugh

Catherine Skelly was born Jan 1867 in or around Virginia, Cavan.
Her mother was an Anne Sheridan and father was a Thomas Skelly.

I have hit a brick wall on Michael Green. I don't have birth/death information on him. I only know that he served in the army and died around 1905 or 1906.

Would deeply appreciate any information. I have already searched LDS records that I could obtain and also Ancestry.com.  I believe I'm the first to try and create a family tree on these families.

The family lived in Virginia and I know that because they were so close to the Meath border, the boundaries may be rather fuzzy when it comes to looking up church records. Please let me know if I should be looking at Meath for such records.

Thank you.

Michael Green's marriage certificate should list his father's name and occupation. If no father is listed it is possible that Michael was illegitimate, his father was deceased or that clergyman forgot to record the information.
The 1911 and 1901 census records are slowly coming online. Check to site to see when Cavan, etc. are available: www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search. You will hopefully be able to locate Michael there and have an approx. age for him- also check in the area for other relatives.

Thank you for the reply. I checked the site and it appears that at this time it covers only Dublin. I'll check again later.

Michael died abt 1905/06 and he was in the army at the time.

Would there be a death record somewhere?

The extract of the marriage certificate (copied information) does not have a spot for parents of bride and groom. There is a place for the witnesses: Patrick Skelly (relation of Catherine's I presume) and a Margaret Nulty.

The date of the marriage register is 14 April 1885, Kilskyre parish

Is is the church record of the marriage that you have? The marriage certificate from civil registration should list names and occupations of both fathers (there is certainly a space on the certificate for the information).

If Michael died in Ireland then his death should have been registered and a certificate should be available.

Yes that is from local church records.
If they were married in a rural RC church where would civil registration records be? Would the civil certificate be in the county or would I have to contact Dublin?

Thanks

This should help --> http://www.gro.ie/fees.htm

I've typically gone directly to the county registrar, but you can also go to Roscommon.

Also the 1901/1911 Census records should be orderable through an LDS local Family History Center, if they are of interest to you.  Just make sure you order the film containing the proper Townland.

Good luck,
John
