c1793 Wigton birth/baptism: Margaret Ann PORTEOUS

Hi all,

The 1851 and 1861 censuses put Margaret Ann PORTEOUS' birth year at 1795 and 1793 respectively and give her place of birth as Wigton.

Would it be possible for anyone to find a birth and/or baptism record for this individual.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you mean Margaret STODDART (nee THORNTHWAITE) who married Joseph STODDART in 1826, or someone totally different?

I can't see a Marg* PORT* who fits your description in either census. Huh

Yeah. She married Joseph Stoddart but I didn't know when. I just found that Margaret THORNTHWAITE in the IGI. I had never seen that before. Come to think of it, I think I got the name 'Margaret Porteus' from a secondary source.

Have you been able to find a birth date/place for this Margaret THORNTHWAITE to confirm it?

I found this in the IGI:

MARGARET THORNTHWAITE
28 MAR 1797
Allonby, Cumberland, England

Father: THOMAS THORNTHWAITE
Mother: MARY WATSON

It looks good except for the date of birth and place of birth...

The 1851 census certainly doesn't say Wigton.  I can't make out what it does say Huh

As for her age, she didn't seem to know it either, did she? Smiley

Again, you've got a point about the place and date of birth. It appears that she wasn't all that sure of either.
