Elusive Cumberland marriage. Help needed.

Hi all,

I know that Thomas NICHOLSON (b. 1828 Wetheral) and Mary STODDART (b. 1827 Allonby) had a son John Joseph Nicholson in Aspatria in 1855 but I have never been able to find their marriage record. I have checked the Ancestry and FreeBMD records from 1840 to 1860 to no avail.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do next?

if Mary was married previously she may be listed in the index under her previous marriage name.

have you found them on the 1851 census? does it say married this should narrow it down a bit

of course they may have never married and just said they were.

there is the marriage on IGI mary stoddart-john sampson
1847 in carlisle.
so it might be worth checking a mary sampson-thomas nicholson marriage.

She seems to be unmarried, staying with her parents in 1851  Undecided

i think i found Thomas Nicholson in 1851 unmarried with his parents, based on his name and p.o.b & y.o.b

Yeah, on the 1851 census they are both still unmarried and living with their parents.

Nutty - I remember seeing this a while back.
