I am so shocked and saddened to learn of Peter's death.
My heartfelt sympathies and love go out to Carol, Brian and Gillian.
I first met Peter on Rootschat in August 2004.  We discovered that he had lived in Macclesfield and I in Wilmslow when we were teenagers, and went to the same disco on Saturday nights, but never met.
Because Ancestry had not yet transcribed the 1841 and 1861, we used to swap CDs with the Cheshire census and Marriage Indexes on.  He was a lovely lovely man, and we had so many laughs via PMs.
Although the family moved to Yorkshire, I believe his heart was always in Cheshire, which he proved time and time again by his ceaseless aid to those of us researching there.
Rootschat and especially the Cheshire board will never be the same again.
Peter will be muchly missed.  I, among many others, will feel his loss greatly, not only for his expertise, but for his kindness, help and warmth.  I shall miss him as though he was a member of my own family
When I am stuck in the future, it will be a case of 'Come on Peter, give me a shove in the right direction' for I'm sure he will still be there to give us a helping hand.
Love and Hugs to his dear family.

A Poem for Peter ~~~
                              Sweet Cheshire
Sweet Cheshire, land of meadows and of mere
Of lowing kine and waters clear
of thickets misty in a bluebell haze
and hedgerows with the white thorn all ablaze
Where clamouring geese, high poised on pinion strong
In wedge-like squadrons, cleave their way along
Or where on moorland high the curlew call
Or where pheasant seek the copse behind the hall
Where birch and bracken vie in dark Rudheath
And Beeston frowns on smiling plains beneath
By hill or rivers, mead or sunlit moor
From Disley's heights to Hoylake's windswept shore
From Bosley Cloud to mouth of silver Dee
Beauty thy handmaid is, and waits on thee

By a poet called Illingsworth.

Farewell dear friend

What sad news, I am so sorry and I send my deepest symathies to Peter's family.  Although I don't think I ever had any contact with Peter it is obvious from reading here that he was a kind and helpful gentleman and he will be sadly missed by his family and all his friends.

Kind regards,
Maggie

Peter's daughter, Gillian, here.

I would like to thank everyone who have sent their good wishes and prayers to mum, Brian and myself.  We have found all these wonderful messages a great comfort.

His funeral was held on Monday and we were delighted that Sarah and Trystan were able to join us.  Rootschat was a big part of Dad's life for the last few years and I am glad he was able to help so many, I am sure many of you were able to help him in return and as a result he leaves behind his wonderful work on his cheshire roots site.

I will continue logging in to see what is happening and pick up some much needed tips!

Many thanks again.

Hi Gillian

I am so glad that you found some comfort in knowing how well-loved and respected you dad was by his friends on Rootschat.

It is hard to believe now, but it is a true saying, that time heals. You will never forget your dad, but you will always have those wonderful memories.

God bless you and your family this Christmastime.

Best wishes, Judy

Dear Gillian & Family
I am sending back to you a picture that  Peter sent to me - of Half Street, Macclesfield. It meant a great deal to me - to see a Street where my ancestors lived - compliments of Peter - and apparently he lived there, at one time, too. My father, lost his mother, when he was aged only 2, and this photo therefore meant so much to us. It is not just a Street, it is an insight into a life unknown, snatched away. This is what Peter did so well, filled in those gaps in our lives. A good genealogist, as Peter undoubtedley was, gives and enriches.  So - thank you for lending him to us.
I would also say, if I may, as I know Peter must have a very interesting collection of documents, as I sent him the will of Henry Wardle, Lord Mayor of Macclesfield, that you find a very safe home, perhaps in the public domain for the information he has collected.
God Bless you all - his legacy  lives on.

Dear Gillian

Thank you so much for your reply to our messages.   It's always difficult to know just what to say at times like this ........having lost my father quite recently, I do understand what you are going through, but knowing all the lovely people on RootsChat are there to support you as they were with me makes it that bit easier to get through.

Time will heal and time will also allow you to look back at the memories you have of your Dad without shedding a tear.

God Bless

Just noticed the posting about the sad death of Peter Bennett and from Australia I send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Peter was a great help to me with my Cheshire brick wall on the Allen family and I am very grateful to him for the assistance he gave.

Thinking of all to whom he was close.
