Peterborough is in Cambridgshire, but used to be in Northamptonshire

Not sure when it changed -but my gran was born in Peterborough and always said she was from Northamptonshire - on census it is usually stated as being in Northamptonshire

It must have changed counties sometime in the 1900's - but early mid or late Huh

Wikipedia says
From 1889 the ancient Soke of Peterborough formed an administrative county in its own right with boundaries similar, although not identical, to the current unitary authority. The area however remained geographically part of Northamptonshire until 1965, when the Soke of Peterborough was merged with Huntingdonshire to form the county of Huntingdon and Peterborough. Following a review of local government in 1974, Huntingdon and Peterborough was abolished and  became part of the non-metropolitan county of Cambridgeshire.  In 1998 the city became autonomous of Cambridgeshire county council as a unitary authority, but it continues to form part of that county for ceremonial purposes.

So in answer to your question it IS in Cambs, but for genealogical purposes ie pre 1900 it WAS in Northants

Despends which bit of Peterborough it is. North Peterborough is on the Northamptonshire border - south Peterborough is only about 18 miles from Huntingdon and both are now in the county of Cambridgeshire

although confusingly, some peterborough records are held by huntingdonshire record office and some are now held in the fairly recently established peterborough archives!

Sorry to confuse matters even futher, but strictly speaking Peterborough is in fact not in any county now, it is a 'unitary' authority see http://www.peterborough.gov.uk/page-7

Even more confusingly, for ecclesiastical purposes although the Diocese of Peterborough extends well to the south-west of Northampton, that part of the City of Peterborough itself which lies south of the River Nene, is not in the Diocese of Peterborough but that of Ely!

Clear as mud?   Grin  I live there and am constantly confused!
