Susan Whitelock « on: Tuesday 11 December 07 19:55 GMT (UK) »
It is possible that my GGGrandmother was Susan Whitelock, born about 1822 in Southampton. She married Michael Murray who was, it seems, born in 3 different places. They had a son Charles Murray who was an umbrella maker and they moved to Birmingham. Any info much appreciated on Susan.
I found the couple in 1861 - when did they marry? And are the ages on that census relatively accurate? Susan is shown as 10 year older than Michael (39 for Susan and 29 for Michael.) Charles is shown as 14. I'm concerned that he may not be Michael's son and that this is Susan's second marriage.
I cannot find a baptism for a Susan Whitelock in Hampshire at the moment.

Hi Neil and Daisy and thanks for your replies. I agree about the age difference with Michael and Susan. In later census the ages get closer together and Michael is born in Leeds and/or Ireland; VERY strange. I think the couple may have married in Halifax in 1844 but I am not sure of that fact. I may have to send for the certificate and risk it being the right one. I would love the Christening to be the right one and I will have to do some more research on that. I never thought about Susan having been married before. Many thanks and a merry Christmas to you both. Mike

Hi Mike,
I only suggested that Susan was married before because Charles was apparently born in 1847 or so when his father would have been 15 if his age in 1861 is to be believed. And if you are correct and they married in 1844, then Michael would have been 12 at that time.
Hi Nell (sorry I got your name wrong last time, I'm not a very good typist) I found Michael and Susan in Middlesex in 1851 under the name Murry. Michael was born in 1825 in Leeds. Charles was born in Birmingham, his sister in Staffordshire and his brother in Bethnel Green. Michael was an umbrella maker. I think I can discount the marriage in Halifax, it just does not ring true. I will have to start looking for another marriage in either Southampton, Birmingham, Staffs or Bethnel Green. It seems as if I was named after Michael as there is no other Michael in the family tree. Mike
