Sextons
« on: Thursday 13 December 07 16:55 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know anything about Sextons please?

My 4x great grandfather, John Armitage's marriage certificate dated 24 September 1839 (at St Paul's Church Warrington to Ellen Heyes/Hayes) states that his father was called John Armitage and that he was a Sexton.

There is a death recorded at St Paul's for a John Armitage aged 41 of Mersey Street for 18 November 1837, which seems to be him but unfortunately, his birth in 1795 or so is elusive, as it wasn't in Warrington.

My first question is how were Sextons appointed and did the churches keep records of them?, and my second,

Does anyone know if the records of St Paul's Church Bewsey Road Warrington (which was demolished) remain and where they might be kept, as it seems possible he was a Sexton there?

I would welcome any help here, as I have reached a brick wall for John senior.

Thanks

A Sexton was an official assistant to the Parish Clerk, responsible
for grave digging, bell-ringing, and other jobs in and around a parish church. The sexton was appointed and paid by a parish, incumbent or churchwardens. In the Church of England a sexton may now be appointed by an incumbent and parochial church council who determine his (or her) terms of employment.

The records of St. Pauls church should be in the Diocesan Record Office.
