Hello from an amateur family historian , I have an ancestor called Benjamin Rowarth SIMPSON , christened 3 July 1810 in Belper (information from IGI) . I have got a copy of his christening record from Matlock as the name Rowarth was not on the IGI and neither is it on the christening record . I am satisfied that his name is correct from his death certificate in 1867 . The IGI states his parents were called Adam and Ann , so a further search on the IGI gave me a possible marriage of Adam SIMPSON to Ann BROUGH 14 February 1808 in Duffield (by Licence) . A copy of the marriage entry was obtained and that states Adam to be a widower and Ann to be a widow however the IGI has recorded their possible dates of birth as about 1783 and 1787 respectively which I consider to be quite young to lose partners and I was wondering if that information was accurate and that their ages have been assumed ?
I am now making assumptions and I may be looking too deeply into this research as an amateur but I have found a marriage on the IGI of a William BROUGH to an Ann RAWORTH on the 19 February 1787 at Heanor (by licence) . I was wondering whether this marriage could have a connection in so much as William BROUGH may have died and Ann remarried with Adam SIMPSON and Benjamin took her maiden name . I appreciate that Rowarth and RAWORTH are spelt differently but there may have been a transcribing error onto the IGI ? Should I take this line of enquiry further and if so should I look for a death of a William BROUGH or request the marriage record ? I would appreciate your thoughts . Thank you . HOWMUCH

Hi,
One or two thoughts on what you've written.
The dates of birth for Adam SIMPSON and Ann BROUGH on the IGI are patron submissions rather than from extracted records and should therefore be treated with caution. The person submitting has deducted 25 years for the groom and 21 years for the bride from the date of the marriage in 1808, which is standard practice with patron submissions where the submitter doesn't know when the birth took place. Personally I would ignore the birth entries for them in this case.
Could Adam and Ann have been bereaved at such a young age? Sadly, yes, although if the date of birth on the IGI is wrong they could have been older.
Is it likely that Ann was originally Ann RAWORTH/ROWARTH? Given that the name appears on her son's death certificate it doers seem likely that it was a family name and may well have been her maiden name. Using family names like that was quite common and can help to trace a family line through several generations where it keeps recurring. The spelling isn't particularly significant in my view - if they couldn't read and write it would depend on what people heard and how they spelled it anyway. I have a family who were called Coward or Cawood depending on who was writing it.
Just my two-pennyworth...
All the best, redshank

Hello Redshank Thank you very much for your input , it was much appreciated . I have noticed that comment about birth years being put down as 25 years and 21 years before when marriages are being recorded on the IGI . I feel now that I am at the stage of my research where I may have to just accept that I may never know for definite about a particular family line . I suppose when you get earlier than 1837 then this will happen and I will have to learn to live with that . I may try a lookup on Phillimores records for that particular marriage namely William BROUGH to Ann RAWORTH on 19 February 1787 at Heanor to see what that entry says prior to requesting a copy from Matlock . Once again many thanks for your interest . HOWMUCH
