In need of advice finding the Wards
« on: Thursday 13 December 07 21:41 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I recently sent off for some certificates to Warwick, but to my dismay I have had a letter come back saying the people I am searching for can not be found. I was wondering if anyone out there has any advice on where I can go from here.

The first one I sent off for was for a William Ward born about 1854 in the Parish of St Mary Warwick. I have found him on the GRO REF. 6D 418, I have found him on all census from 1861 to 1901, and also I have his marriage certificate to a Mary Jane Metcalf.

The next one I was after was for his Parents marriage certificate also named William Ward to Mary Johnson. They where married about 1849 in the Warwick area. I have their GRO REF. XVI 903, I have also found them in several census.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on where I can go from here. I know I can order them from the General Register Office, but it is so expensive. Does anybody out there have any ideas on where I can go from here.

Any help or advice for someone starting out would be much appreciated. Cry

Hi Hadyn,

The GRO refs only apply to certificates ordered from the GRO not to ones ordered locally.

I thought all copies cost £7!

If you have an exact date for the event the WRO. will give you that info.
But if they have to search there is a charge. As Nanny Jan said the GRO ref.
isn't recognised by local RO's. & isn't any cheaper.
Get them from the GRO.

I am sorry I am new to all this. In the past I have only ever ordered certificates by sending them off to the the register office.

I am not sure how you go about ordering these. Any advice would be great. All I have been told in the past about ordering from the GRO is that it would cost tens of pounds. Is this not correct?

Thanks in advance for the help

Thats brilliant thanks. I have put my order in.

Just one question. Do the certificates you get from here look just like the one you get from the local offices?

Thanks again for the help

Hi

William Ward married Mary Johnson  30 DEC 1849 at St Mary's Warwick.  If someone has the Parish records for St Mary it might save you some money.

They look the same but the ones you get from your local RO may be copies of the original. The ones you get from the GRO are copies of the copies sent by the local RO.Other than that they are identical in format & info.

Hi all

Thanks Jim for that I did wonder.

Graham I was wondering how you managed to know they got married on the 30th of December in St Mary. All I could find was that they where registered in December 1849 in the Warwick area. What is IGI Source?

I am learning fast here LOL....

Thanks in advance

Hi Haydn

The International Genealogical Index, or IGI (by which most people refer to it) is useful if you want to go back earlier than 1837.  It consists of parish records from about 1500 but is NOT a complete index and generally any information you find should be checked against the original church parish records.  Most town libraries (and some local libraries) should have microfiche copies of the index for at least their own county if not the whole of the UK.

The following link on genuki.co.uk   gives more detailed info and guidance on the IGI:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/igi.html

Good luck with your research

Graham
