and more importantly....

the link I have just sent gives guidance when searching the index online on the LDS (familysearch.org) website.  Personally,  I prefer to check the microfiched indexes at the Library and then check the actual parish record,  although I do use the online index as a quick,  finding aid.

Cheers

I Graham

This is brilliant. It shows I have much to learn. I have managed to find the Christening of William Ward on  30 MAY 1829  at   Saint Mary, Warwick, Warwick, England and his parents are James Ward and a Elizabeth.

Source Information:
Batch No.:     Dates:     Source Call No.:     Type:     Printout Call No.:     Type:
   C041531     1782 - 1808     0559245      Film     0933442      Film
   C041531     1813 - 1876     0559246      Film     0933442      Film
   Sheet: 00

I have also managed to find christenings for his brothers and sisters. This is brilliant.

I am a bit stuck on James and Elizabeths Marriage as there are quite a few hits.

Now I am guessing if I wanted to take this further. E.g. find Elizabeths maiden name. I would have to travel to Warwick to see the parish records. But where would I go, what would I do. Are the records in an arcive or in some church. Can I just turn up or do I have to make an appointment. Do they allow you to make copys or not. I live quite a distance away so would like to have some idea of what to do first.

Thanks again for everything so far.

The records are held on fiches at War.CRO.It's a short walk from Warwick station.
You don't need to make an appointment but you do need ID. to gain entry. To access archive material at any records office you need what is called a C.A.R.N.
This is a credit card type pass which will be issued to you on arrival and is yours to keep for future visits. The type of ID. is just the usual passport, utility bills. etc.
I'll have a look for Elizabeth.

you will find this site very useful when you are searching by Parish.
It's taken from IGI but allows you to search for a family by Parish

1851 census says Elizabeth now calling herself Betsy was aged 50 and born Kenilworth.
I have this marriage:
James Ward=Betsey Marshall/27/4/1829/St.Michael's Coventry.
Kenilworth is a couple of miles away.
If you want any of the census info. just ask.

Hi thanks for that. I have been on the link you gave me. There certainly where a fair few Ward over the years in St Mary. I did not realise it was such a popular Surname  Undecided

Would you happen to know if the record office is open on weekends? I do not think I would get away with the boss giving me time off in the week to research dead people lol.

Yes any info you have would be great

Just one more quick question.

If I did go looking at parish records what kind of information do they give. Do they give mothers maiden name etc.

Also for the marriage records do they give parents names and witnesses etc?

Wow this stuff is brilliant. Thanks Grin

I have a census for 1861 for what I belive is William - living with his wife Mary in Burtons Court, Saltisford, Parish of St Mary, Warwick.

On here is his Sons William and John and Daughters Mary Jane, Elizabeth, and what I thought was Sarah Ann.

But are you saying you have found a census for William and his Sister together.

Do I have the right info?Huh

Hi

Also Warwick St mary's has a census of its own (a basic church census that gives the head of the households name and number of occupants) for 1831, 1821 and 1811. Worth having a look at for your Ward's. You will also find good maps of Warwick in 1851 and 1811 showing the town at this time.

I have never ever seen a maiden name written on a baptism entry after 1837 unless the child was base born, Jim?
