Lewington/Gough of Newbury
« on: Thursday 13 December 07 23:05 GMT (UK) »

I am looking for some baptisms in Newbury and was wondering if anyone could help find them or know where the records are .

I have found the marriage of my Gr x 3 Grandparents John Lewington(Lewenden)  and Winifred Gough in 1807 in Newbury Berkshire (from the familyhistoryonline site . )

From the 1851/61 census they would have been born about 1774 (John in Speen) and 1785 (Winifred in Newbury)

I have found children William and Elizabeth b 1826 , possibly twins as they are shown as the same age in 1841 cenus aged 15 and Mary Ann (my relative ) who was born about 1828.

Would anyone have access to the parish records for Newbury to find any possible children for John and Winifred from 1807, including the three I know of ?  Also any record of a baptism of Winifred Gough about 1785 ?

Many thanks  Smiley Smiley

Parish registers are in the Berkshire Record Office
Copies (microfiche/film) in Newbury Library and in LDS library (hence available via any of thier FHCs)

Thanks for the information .

I see that you are interested in Newbury Almshouses. This family  lived there in 1851 when John Lewenden/Lewingdon  was 'a carpenter almsman' aged 75  with wife Winefred and daughter Mary aged 23 (my relative ) and in 1861 Winefred Lewington was there alone aged 76 and a widow . Do you know anything about this family or life at this time there ? Are the almshouses still there?

Are the almshouses still there?

It depends which almshouses he was in. There are over 100 these days about twice as many as in 1851.

Since 1851 four blocks of almshouses have been demolished (one of them by the Luftwaffe), some of the others have relocated but the original buildings are still standing. Four blocks are still in use as almshouses and more have been built.

From the 1851 census I would guess (assuming that the street is enumerated in order and away from the church) that your couple were in Coxedds Almshouses, two cottages in West Mills. However, they could be in Pearce's Almshouses another two cottages almost next door. All four cottages were vacated by the almspeole in 1884 after new houses were built in Enborne Road (still in use as Coxedd & Pearce's Almshouses). However, the cottages are still there today in one of Newbury's more picturesque areas.

Hi Bellou

You may like to know that a David William Lewendon is a trustee of the Coxedd, Pearce & Kimber Almshouses.  I think he is the son of a Mr WJ Lewendon of Speen.  There are lots of Lewendons in Newbury  but this seems a strong coincidence!
- I believe Lewendon is a Berkshire name and the Newbury Lewendons are being researched by an Alexander Lewendon Martin here:
