Hello
I hope someone can help. In the 1901 cesus the Rodgers family live at 3 Little Noel St,off Ashbourne rd there were 9, however there is a 10 person. This person is 'Harry Griffiths' under Grandson? and i think this is my Grandad aged 2. I pretty sure it is him though 2 uncles who are still alive find it hard to believe. Iam in the process of confirming his birth when I get his death certificate because this is up in the air!

Anyhelp would be most helpfull.

You don't say why your uncles don't think this could be your grandad Huh

Is it because of the Griffiths surname?

William Rodgers married Mary Griffiths 1880 December Qu Derby 7b 906 so that may be where the name comes from

Anyway here's the family in 1891

Seems to be quite a gap between Samuel & William, so perhaps another daughter married a Griffiths...

I'm wondering if William or Mary were married before, that would explain why there is the gap in children's ages, and Samuel would be from the previous marriage, possibly Mary's. I think you'll need that marriage certificate. If Samuel was originally surnamed Griffiths, then married, maybe he's the father of your Harry. Struggling to find them on the 1881 census, hope you have more luck at your study centre!

I have spoken with my uncle who confirms that my Gt grandads name was Samuel. He also gave me Harry Griffiths (actual name William Henry Griffiths but was always called 'Harry') BOM 28.11.1897 i have been down to the local study and found that there were three Willam Henry Griffiths born at this time. The places are

Haverfordwest 11a 1170
Ashton 8d 545
Salford 8d 29

So I do not think Harry was born in Derby. I think Samuel is the missing link.

Right, so it looks as if Samuel was Mary's son before she married William (think we'd already worked that out!)

I still haven't found him in 1881, but this will be him in 1901 born Nantwich as per 1891 census and with sister-in-law (stepsister really) Mary Rogers, but Samuel has now gone back to surname Griffiths. (not sure which he'll be under in 1881, 1891 may have been a mistake and he was Griffiths all along!

I wonder if your uncle may have got the dates of birth mixed up, as there's a birth for Samuel William (aged 3 on 1901 census) December Qu 1897 Derby 7b 523 - and have just found one in the GRO index for William Henry in 1899 (aged 2 on 1901 census) March Qu 1899 Derby 7b 515 William Henry Griffiths
(remember freebmd is not complete)

I thought the same but after carefull thought Harry was born in

1897 1888 1899 1900 1901
Nov 28 1 yr 2yr 3 rd 4 th

I think when the censor arrived Mary Rodgers was not sure of his age. I spoke with uncle Jim and he took the date off the Harry Griffiths death certificate.

See my last post, I've amended it as I've found his birth in 1899 Derby - you'd need to check with the registrar if the parents are correct before buying the certificate

Death cert dates can't be relied on as it depends if the informant knew his dob exactly, and I'm sure Mary would have known if he was 2 or 4, big difference at that age! What was his age on his marriage cert, if you have it?

Many thanks again! this is doin my head in! I checked in the local history place and found no William Henry Griffiths for 1899! It seems I have come full circle! I need to sit down and go through this information and speak with me uncles.

Once again many thanks for the information that would of took me months!

Any advice you could give me on the materials you used?

Hi Grant,

I subscribe to ancestry and findmypast and a couple of others. At your local studies centre or library you should have been able to look (free) at the full General Register Office (GRO) index, which is where I found Wm Hy's birth, as I said, the freebmd site is not complete yet. You could also use ancestry free to go through each quarter for that year for bmds.

For census, only the 1881 is free to view on www.familysearch.org or www.ancestry.co.uk or www.findmypast.com - and there is a free website freecen but again it's not complete yet, the others are pay-to-view, but we don't mind looking them up on here! Parish registers are partly online on freereg, some have been transcribed and are online, you just need to enter the district into your search box to see if any are available. www.genuki.org.uk gives good information about all sorts of things, where church records are kept, etc, worth just having a good look at all these sites.
