Hi Out there, I have a census relating to a Martha Rippington of 1861 showing her born as a British subject, although on others it indicates born at Walton, Suffolk. I have recently found that her husband Thomas Reppington had been a Riding Officer as he was in a Government occupation, could this be the reason for British subject ? He died in Skegness in 1835. Any help, Cheers

Its usually indicated where someone was born abroad, of British citizenship parents (often Military or Civil Service), so hence the person is indicated as also a British Subject..
I guess it could have also been stated if an individual had been naturalized - but given that this lady was born in Suffolk, it seems strange - was it trying to differentiate her from others on the page ?
I dont see why Thomas, in a Customs job should qualify, unless he was actually born abroad ?

I've found the 1861 entry and theres no reason I can see why it says 'British Subject' ..... unless its something to do with next door being Dutch ?

Thanks very much for the information, The Thomas Reppington I have also discovered was possibly in the 15th Light Dragoons and discharged in 1814 at the age of 31. Could have served in the Peninsular Wars, hope to find more research i due course, could this be the reason for British subject? although he was born in Warwickshire.

The census years are full of examples of odd things - sometimes sourced by the householder, sometimes the enumerator
