What is this surname, please?
« on: Friday 14 December 07 18:10 GMT (UK) »

Can SKS please look at 1861 census for William Wharton aged 7 born Chesterfield Derbyshire, and tell me what the surname of his grandparents is.

Somehow I don't think is is as transcribed by Ancestry as Cabritap, although I can see it's hard to decipher.

Thanks,
Linda

Looking in 1851, it seems to be Gabbites.

HO107/2122; Folio: 640; Page: 10

A MiL Ann Whitehead was with them - but no unmarried daughter ...

worth looking for a marriage to a Wharton in the early 1850s .....

28 individuals with variations of that surname in the Worksop area alone in 1841 ...

this must be the Harriet who marries in 1852 ? Ann Whitehead was with the Gabbitass in 1851 remember ...

Hey, Thanks everyone.

I think you've sorted it out for me. John & Harriet Wharton are in Chesterfield Derbyshire in the 1861, with their other children, while William is staying with his Gabbitas grandparents.
