Look up request Edward Clark 1885 in Farnham
« on: Friday 14 December 07 18:58 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone help me find the birth record for Edward Clark born in Farnham in 1885,
living in Wrecclesham, Farnham at the time of the 1891 census. The parish
in 1891 is St Peter's Wrecclesham -does anyone have access to the church records?

Do you know if he had a second name.

There is an Edward Albert CLARKE birth registered at Farnham, Jun qtr 1885, 2a 100.

Can't see any Edward CLARKE on 1891 born Farnham.

There is an Edmund CLARK birth registered Farnham, Dec qtr 1884 2a 123. Again can't see him in 1891. The index is typed, but there could have been a transcription error from the hand written one.

No deaths on FreeBMD from 1885-1891 for any Edward/Edmund/CLARK/CLARKE combinations either

Ian & Jane,

Thanks for looking - as far as I know he had no middle names and certainly he is just plain "Edward Clark" on his daughter's birth certificate and on the marriage register.
I'm assuming it wouldn't be uncommon for a name like Clark to gain and then lose an 'e' depending on who's transcribing it, in which case it may be that Eward Albert Clarke is the man and he just never again used his middle name.

If I were able to get hold of the marriage certificate do you know if it would give his date of birth? He was married in 1914.
I also have found an entry on the death register for 1963 which I suspect may be him - again I don't know what details these certificates contain.

As for the other candidate, am I right in thinking that the only way of checking whether "Edward" has been mis-transcribed as "Edmund" would be to send for the certificate?

I really appreciate the help - I'm new to this and I'm discovering what a curse it is to have ancestors
with such common christian names and surnames!

The 1881 census has them all as CLARKE with the E on the end.

I have CLARKE in my ancestry, but generally always check CLARK spelling as well. Some of mine are also spelt both ways on the censuses.

The marriage cert would be good to have -it will give age of groom (and bride) -although these are not always correct -and sometimes it will say "of full age" -which means 21 or over -this is more often used if it is a second marriage and the couple are "getting on in years"

However, it will not give the actual date of birth

It will also give you the groom's occupation.

In addition it will give you the groom (and brides) father's names and occupations.

Sometimes the witnesses are relatives -which can give further clues .

That will give you a good start in finding them on the census -and if you then find a possible birth reg and send for the certificate, you can specify father's name (and you would only be charged a couple of pounds search fee if the certificate you are requesting is not the correct one.

It is a good idea to get certificates - especially in the early stages of your research.

I know what you mean with the name Clark/e

my aunt's maiden name was Clarke (with an "E") she married , was widowed, and then remarried to a Clark/e -she never knew if her husband 's name had an "e" or not, so whenever she had to sign her name she put Clark -and then a fancy little squiggle on the end -just in case it should have an "e"!!! The enumerator's will have fun with that!!!!
