HELP! Wireless network dropping out!
« on: Saturday 15 December 07 10:38 GMT (UK) »

I have been working wirelessly using a Belkin router for a couple of years now.

Suddenly my wireless connection keeps dropping out - it is not displayed in my list of available networks - although this shows up to seven networks are within range (all but one secure).

My question - do these other networks interfere with my ability to receive my own signal?

I have tried rebooting the router and sometimes it coincides with the laptop reconnecting, sometimes not - very frustrating!

I'd be grateful for any suggestions as to how to fix this on a more permanent basis - and I hope to be here to read the replies!

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

I don't understand the question?  I can access the internet on my pc, which isn't wireless - is that what you mean?

I can stand by the router and watch the "transmit" light go off, then 10 minutes later it will just magically come back on!

I wonder if a nearby Belkin unsecured network is on the same frequency?

I meant: Does it work when you connect your laptop to the router with a usb cable?

Just trying to find out where it comes from until the people who know what they're talking about come along  Tongue Grin

Thanks for the moral support Tati!  Cool

I haven't tried to link via a cable - scared to change anything now that I am finally online, lol!

Have been reading some techie problem pages and it seems (a) Belkin isn;t a good choice (b) other routers can interfere if they are on the same channel - but why does my transmit light go out? (c) I should check my USB adaptor - don't think I have one do I??

Have discovered a helpline number though, so if all else fails...

Anyone else had this problem?

My dad has problems with using his laptop in the kitchen - there is just too much electrical interference. Works great in the living room and upstairs though.

I don't have Belkin so I can't really comment. Mine blinks (sends signals) all the time even if a laptop isn't connected. If you sit with your laptrop right next to the router, is the signal improved or is it only at a distance?

As you can see all the other networks, its doubtful its the laptop wireless card thats playing up.

Try googling wireless network problems, I found an excellent forum but is for cable (ntl/virgin) run by ex-network engineers, i always use them if I have problems.

jc

ps... did some googling myself and this is the first check that has sprung out at me since you mention possible interference from other wireless networks in your area
This was troubleshooting a Belkin router  but works in general for others too.
"Other thing to try is the wireless channel your router is set to use. It has probably default to 11 (try channels 1 or 6). You only need to make this change on the router. The computer should automatically detect the change."

I have found with some wireless routers that they drop the connection briefly for no apparent reason.

A card in my desktop will connect to a Linksys router but does not show it as an available network for some reason.

Check what channel you are using and whether anyone else in the area is using the same channel, I prefer to specify the channel number rather than leave it on automatic.

Many wireless routers are left with the default SSID (like "Belkin 54g"), change it to a name of your own and don't forget to use some sort of security to prevent others using your wireless connection.

I have wireless on this laptop but I also have a RJ45 cable in use as faster and more reliable.

This link to the Belkin website seems to offer a sort to the problem.
I hope it's of some help.

We had the same problem and now use Develo hotwire plugs and Network Magic. This sets up a network through the mains wiring of the house, we just take our plug and plug in to any socket and we are on line with no cut outs.

Cost about £90 but worth every penny.

Arranroots

Mine started well and then continually dropped out. I finally discovered it was not compatible with my internet service provider. Strangely it didn't actually say that on the box when I purchased it and I didn't realise that could be a problem. Have you checked with your service provider help line?

Regards

Thanks for the replies and various suggestions.

I think the fact that the router is set on default channel 11 will probably be the cause - I need to find the documentation in the loft before I can change it though, as the password is about 13 characters long!

There was a prob with a specific Belkin router, but not mine.  I did download a patch when this first happened a few days ago (firmware, whatever that is?!?) but it hasn't fixed it.

I seldom look to see what networks are in range but I seem to recall there were only a couple when we first set up ours - now it is nine!

And yes, I have tried standing over the router hovering the lappy without any improvment!

No other changes have taken place except that Pipex upgraded us to faster broadband recently - wonder if it could be that?!?

Thanks again, Arranroots (from work at lunchtime!!)

Dont know if you got your problem sorted out.  I did read on another forum of problems people were having with dropped connections on their routers caused by, believe it or not, Christmas lights.  Especially the ones which people string around their houses.

Just a thought.  Problem might go away in the new year.

Seasons Greetings and a healthy 2008.

I sometimes use my laptop on the desk right alongside the router, the WiFi connection usually keeps dropping out when I do that so I turn it off and rely completely on the RJ45.

I am still dropping out!

Problem started before the Christmas decs went up, so don't think it is that.

I haven't changed anything - my McAfee expired just before but that shouldn't affect anything should it?

Still waiting for OH to get the instructions out of the loft ...

Thanks for your suggestions - I see RootsChat is advertising a wi-fi link - maybe I should click?!?
