I have a marriage certificate for one of my possible ancestors, with Joiner Buckley as the bride's father. Her name is Naomi Buckley and she married James Taylor in Stow,Suffolk, in 1861. He is a licensed hawker.

Methinks this is the Kiomi on the family history page I found at Ancestry.com.

Rom names were often mis-transcribed. Justinia Buckley/Smiths name turns up transcribed as Testaner and Jessima on the census transcriptions. Lazarus turns up as something unpronouncable on one of them as well. Its worth knowing too, that the Buckleys sometimes went under the alias of Smith. It did not matter one jot to them if they used the mans surname or the wifes, or indeed his mothers or heaven only knows what connection.

Dud aka Arkless Buckley aka Smith was the hubby of Genty/Jenty/Genti/Gentee Gray g.d/o the fabled No Name Heron/Hearn/Herring for a short time. Its hard work checking out the Rom connections. Follow your nose, and go by gut instinct. Likelihood is, you are probably right. Genty/etc various was bapt as Gentee. she often turns up on the census as plain Jane Gray - but she married Arkless (call it Hercules if you like!) Smith/Buckley and he is with her on the 1871 census only as plain Arthur. But he was a Buckley who went by the Smith name. Jenty Smith died in 1918 and is buried at Gorleston Cem in Yarmouth.

Hi Chellin and An65,

I have found the baptism of Sidney and Arther Buckley, 4/9/1864 & Goliath Buckley 8/9/1867, all sons of Joshua and Alice at Offham, Kent.
Not sure if this fits in with your ancestors.

I think Lavinas baptisms are for the right family. Josiah also turns up as John in one census, and that info gave Sidney, Arthur and Elias (as opposed to Goliath) as children born at the right kind of time to be those baptised in Kent.

Overall, from what Ive been able to snoop around at on Ancestry, the picture is now looking roughly like this:

Joe Buckley married Lavinia Skipper
(both born cir 1780)

They had at least 4 children, all of whom can only be dated to approx 1810.

Elijah, who died in 1833
Hirum, who appears on the 1861 and 1871 census's at Tollesbury Ex, a Brazier born cir 1797 (apparently at Halstead EX). I havent been able to discover a family for him, but he appears to be a widower so its possible we may yet find some.
Sam, no other info.
Joiner b.cir 1810 died 1886 Plaistow Ex, married Sarah "Seni" Smith and possibly the "John Buttery" born cir 1813 Little Wenlock, Shropshire, who appears on the 1871 census with his married daughter Naomi Taylor.

Well Joiner and Sarah/Seni Smith had:

Josiah (or Joseph or John) b.cir 1837 Kent, d.1873, married Alice Smith b.cir 1838 Soham Cam d.1921.

Carnation b.cir 1839 d.1916 also married Alice Smith (presumably late in life).

Justinia b.cir 1835-40 Bury St Edmunds, married Woodlock Smith uncle of the Evangelist Gypsy Rodney Smith.

Naomi b.cir 1845 Bury St Edmunds married James Taylor 1861 Stow Sfk.

Santalena b.cir 1848 "Colomotor" Ex married Harriet b.cir 1842.

Frank b.cir 1842 Sfk married  Elvira Williams b.cir 1849 d.22.02.1882 West Ham

Phoebe b.cir 1842

Hercules b.cir 1843 Sfk

Josiah and Alice had:

Walter b.cir 1857 or 1867 *poss mistranscribed "Ramham" Ex (Raynham??)

Arthur b.cir 1862 Haddon Com, c.4.09.1864 Offham Kt

Sidney b.cir 1865 Orfton Gn, c.04.09.1864 Offham Kt

Elias b.cir 1867 Coffeshall Ex "Goliath" c.08.09.1867 Offham Kt

Eleanor b.cir 1869 Laughton Ex

Lazarus b.cir 1872 d.1925 married Elizabeth Shaw b.cir 1871

Agnes b.cir 1875 Gotham Ex

Prudence b.cir 1875 Upton Park Ex

Matilda b.cir 1877 Upton Park Ex

Florence b.cir 1879 Upton Park Ex

Justinia Buckley and Woodlock Smith had:

Saleh or "Chlar" as one census records her,  b.cir 1866 Bury St Edmunds Sfk

Owen b.cir 1866 Wendon Sfk

Hezekiah b.cir 1867 Wendon Sfk

Matilda b.cir 1880 London.

Naomi Buckley and James Taylor had:

Alfer(Alfie?) b.cir 1863 Bury St Edmunds

Beatrice b.cir 1865 Bury St Edmunds

Orian or Owen?? b.cir 1867 Bury St Edmunds

Selma b.cir 1869 Bury St Edmunds

Theodore b.cir 1871 Plaistow Ex

Isabella b.cir 1881 Hopton Sfk.

Santalena and Harriet had:

Pearson b.cir 1863 Petherer Stf

Adeline b.cir 1865 Petherer Stf

Patrick b.cir 1867 Petherer Stf

Emily b.cir 1869 Petherer Stf

Arthur Hyter (female) (cant read it so have gone with Ancestrys transcription)
b.cir 1870 Plaistow Ex

Finally of course, there is Frank and Elvira, but you already have those.

Hope that helps a wee bit.

Hello again An65,
The Buckleys are not directly related to me either, but in desperation I am looking at possible links hoping to find more about my Taylors.
I am very impressed what you find and the clear way you put it for us to see.

I have 11 children from Naomi Buckley and James Taylor. In 1881 they are staying with my John Taylor and Sophia (Harris) in Hopton, Suffolk.RG11/2013/Pages 9/10.
I am trying to find out if John and James are brothers, I know both their  fathers were called William.

My Taylors also on RG12/1578/2 and RG13/1902/7.

Maybe you have come acroos them in your other searches.

Hope so.

Regards

The only Taylors I came across previously was the family of Phoenix Taylor who married Elizabeth d/o Riley Boss (aka James Heron) and Lucy Boswell. They tended to hang about the Yorks area, tho did sometimes go as far south as Suffolk at least.

As for info found, its all down to Ancestry.co.uk. Smiley

Hi Chellin2

I am a 'Lee'.

Joiner Buckley (1810) is my distant cousins g-g-grandfather, she is descended from his son Frank Buckley (b1842) who married Elvira Williams and Agnes Boswell.  Her grandparents were Franks daughter Bertha Buckley and Edmund Lee.

Frank did have a son called Joiner Buckley who died as a baby (1881-1882)

The book by Terence Lee is very good, but use it as a guide only, as there are quite a few mistakes and omissions in it.

I am in regular contact with my distant cousin who has done heaps of work on her Buckley side. If you want to contact me, I can forward your email address onto her and vice-versa.

Merry Christmas

hi there,
i also have joiner in my family tree. refering to his brother sam, i just wanted to say that he was married to seni smith first but sam was transported to jamaicia/west indies i believe, (dont know why) and on his return his brother had married his wife. Now i would assume that this is ''gypsy marriage'' and not your ''traditional marriage''. sam went on to live with a girl named sarah hansuff, i think thats how its spelt???
hirum married a peggy lee and they had one daughter britannia.
elijah married elizabeth smith and they had 3 children lazzy, oti & levaithen and they all used the name smith after their father died. oti (william) and lazzy (george). there is an article written on george smith by sharon floate and also george smith wrote his own ancestory story, these can be googled.
hope this fills up some gaps. kushti bok. Cheesy

Hi, noticed your reference to the family of Phoenix and Elizabeth Taylor. These are my wifes's great great grand parents. You mentioned encountering them in the yorkshire area. Would it posible you could point us the direction of what you found please?

Regards and thanks in advance
