William Hosken to New Zealand & back to UK for WW1
« on: Sunday 16 December 07 09:00 GMT (UK) »

Family legend has it that my great Uncle William Hosken born Islington London 1890 went to New Zealand to take up farming a short while before WW1.  He came back for the war and was killed in Palestine by the same shell that injured my grandfather out of the army when it hit their camp.  My Grandfather lost his 2 other brothers in the war as well.

I can't find any ship's lists etc that show his journey to NZ or where he settled there (we're not even sure if he might have married while out there) and his journey home again for the Great War.

Can anyone suggest any suitable websites to try?

Thank you very much.

Hi RanR

There is a William Hoskin who left London in 1912 aged 23 for Freemantle, Australia. It's a possibility I  suppose he might have gone on to NZ from there?

Age and dates are about right!  You would need to subscribe to the website http://www.ancestorsonboard.com to check the details or go to the records office at Kew gardens where I think the Ship's lists are kept.

Good luck!

The ship was the Ajana departed 20 December 1912. It looks like there were no family members with him.

Thank you very much everyone.  It's quite something to sit back and watch the rootschat fraternal swing into action!  I had seen the Fremantle entry & had considered it but wasn't sure if that was the kind of route someone would have taken for NZ.  I'm not at all knowledgable about these ship journeys.

Thank you all again.  Are there any websites for ship's lists for a journey from NZ back to UK?

Just to reply spcifically to ev - thanks for the CWGC link.  Numbers 6, 8 & 13 were my great uncles.

As far as the Fremantle passage to Australia goes, where would a ship from Australia go to in NZ in 1912 and would that be a farming community?  I'm assuming it would be sheep farming that my great uncle would have been invlolved in (although I have a friend who married a kiwi fruit farmer in NZ!).
