Hi Tinkerbell,

From 1851-71 William seems to be recorded as born in Tongue in Sutherland, rather than Aberdeen.  ScotlandsPeople does not list any William Gunn born in Tongue 1816-18, but there are three born in Sutherland in that time.

Since both Harriet and William died after 1855, their death certificates should indicate both their parents' names, including their mothers' maiden names.  That may be your best way forward.

Hello Tinkerbell

Little Nell is far too polite   :O)

Some more info needed please.  What do you know about them to indicate the birth dates and places of birth.

I take it that Harriett and William married on 22 Dec 1838 and had a daughter Christina McKay Gunn ch.  08 Nov 1839. (info from IGI)

I tried www.freecen.org.uk fro the 1841 census and couldn't find them - maybe just me?

Cannot find a record of Harriet being born in Aberdeen/shire in 1818 or 5 years either side on www.scotlandspeopel.gov.uk.  This is not unusual as if you read through the info there it advises that up to about 30% or births etc may not be available before 1855.

If Harriett died in Scotland - as Little Nell advises, her parents names will be on her death cert - same goes for William and his parents.  If her daughter married after 1855, it will advise if her parents were still alive.

The more info you give, the more people can help - will also avoid duplication of effort.

Just re-read Little Nells post.  She seems to indicate she has census records having them up to at least 1871? - is that correct?  Any indication of them on the 1881 census?

Good luck with your searching.  Regards,    Steve   :O)
