Granpa Wilson and Cousin Dod - Peebles Cemetery
|
Hi
I've just found a death certificate for an ancestor and the place of death looks like it says royal asylum. The person who reported the death was a messanger and his wife or parents are not known.
his name was John reid blackie, 86, he was a watch and clock maker, born in inveresk 1819.
I can find him in all the censuses but 1901.
Has anyone headr of a royal asylum in edinburgh?

What is the parish reference? And can you post that small section of the certificate for us to have a look at?

There seems to have been a Royal Blind Asylum in Hill Place in 1881 and there was the Royal Blind Asylum and School at Cragmillar Park. Any help?

To save a little bit you need to open the image in a graphics programme, select the part you would like to post and crop it from the rest. Save that section as a new image (don't save any changes tothe original image) and then attach it to the post using the option under the reply box.
Let me know if that is insufficiently detailed and I'll go back a few steps!
Parish reference number might help - 693 or 685/5 or similar?

685 is one for Edinburgh St Cuthberts or St George depending on the date.
John Reid Blackie baptised 20 Nov 1819 Inveresk with Musselburgh, parents George Blackie & Elizabeth Cumming. Is this him? Born 18 Nov the same year.

thats him!
thanks fro the help you two, i see that they have the patients notes for the right period, i don't know if i can apply for them.
I managed to work out that the cause of death was senility and brain disease over 3 years which could be why he was admitted in the first place?

Hi
I can't help you with finding records, but if the place you are looking for is in fact Craighouse, the building is now owned by Napier University (I worked there in the South Craig building, one of the many buildings on campus, over three years ago). It is a beautiful building and the story is there are many tunnels underneath leading to the west end of Edinburgh (so the rich patients were not seen entering the hospital!). You can still see the skylights in the grounds for these tunnels.
Napier has a wee bit in their website (April 1994)http://www.news.napier.ac.uk/background/bkInfo6.htm which you may or many not find interesting!

poppysmum,
I am interested in the Blackies that were watchmakers in Musselburgh. My direct line Charles Hutton had a brother George Hutton in Inveresk who worked for a George Blackie and George Blackie was witness at his wedding. Any info on George Blackie be very welcome.
