Help Needed
« on: Sunday 16 December 07 12:29 GMT (UK) »

Hello all, my 1st post.
Tracking back the Burrows( Burroughs/Burrow/Burres/Borrows) family. I have quite a few in the Wellington area from around 1788.
Ketley and Wrockwardine also feature strongly. As there seem to be a Wrockwardine and a Wrockwardine Wood in Shropshire has anyone any idea which is the more likely, and where would the Parish records be kept?

Hi Garrett

Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

Wrockwardine and Wrockwardine Wood are in the same parish:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/Wrockwardine/index.html

Parish records are kept at Shrewsbury Archives:

http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf

but some of us do have access to some parish records, so ask away  Smiley

 Gadget,
Thanks for the useful links. From the IGI,   Benjamin Burroughs = Jane this would probably be around 1757 and hopefully in the same area,  as I have his son William born in Wrockwardine in 1758.
And then William Burras = Alley, Alice or Ellice, around 1787. The 1st child of which was Honor Trever Burrows b. 1788 at Wellington. I'd be grateful for any help.

Pete and Gadget,
What a result! I cant thank you enough for the information which will make a trip to Shropshire worthwhile. I obviously need to find the marriage location now for Benjamin Burroughs = Jane, fingers crossed it will be in Shropshire and held at Shrewsbury, what are the chances do you think?

If you do a Burroughs search on Ancestry this comes up:

John Evans (ch 31/12/1769) married Sarah BURROUGHS (13/11/1788)
Appears to be Dawley area.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the info on Sarah Burroughs, I'm sure she fits in somewhere as Dawley is still fairly close by. It seems I've got a lot of linking up to do.

Hi Peter,
Now that is a good one if I can make the link. I cant find Stanwardine on my map, do you know where it is? And what is the Lay Subsidy? Forgive my ignorance to both questions.

Stanwardine is close to Baschurch. Put it into Google and click Maps.

The Lay Subsidy was a tax. Lay as in it didn't apply to the church only "lay" people and Subsidy because it was to subsidize Henry VIII's war against France. 3,800 people are listed under Shropshire for 1524-7. Later subsidies tended to be set at a higher threshold so only the more wealthy paid.

Thanks Peter and Gadget,
Found Stanwardine and now understand the Lay Subsidy.  Looks like I may have to spend next years holidays in Shropshire which is no bad thing. Merry Christmas to you all.

Thanks Peter,
During my random searches I've come across quite a few Burroughs's in Madeley, it would be strange if we have a family link too.  Time will tell!
