I am trying to find the parents of Richard Wadeson who was born 31/7/1826 Bayhorse, Lancaster (or possibly Gaythouse) and who won the Victoria Cross.
I am unable to decide which Richard Wadeson on the 1841 census he is. Any help would be appreciated.

The area in Lancaster is called Bay Horse - was dellvering cards for Scout Xmas post around there this week. Didn't know the area that well, know it a little better now! It is and probably was, a very spread-out sort of area, other placenames worth searching under would include Ellel, Dolphinholme, Cockerham, Forton, Thurnham and Galgate.
Hope this helps

Hello again, further to that last (I will do anything to put off the last minute shopping) I've just looked up and found 3 Richard Wadesons of the right sort of age. Two in the Warton/Silverdale area, several miles north of Bay Horse, and one in central Lancaster, Brock St near Penny Street (still there!), which looks like the nearest. He would be my best bet.
More helpful than me however would probably be the Lancaster City Museum, which includes a regimental section for the Knigs Own Regiment. http://www.kingsownmuseum.plus.com/enquiries.htm Even if Richard was not attached to the local regiment, they would probably know where to find info on a local hero.

Thanks for all the information, but I have all that!!!
I have found a family in 1861 with children born Bay Horse, Nr Forton, Lancaster, Lancashire, but the parents were not married until 1837, so it could be that Richard Wadeson snr born 1808 in Skerton, Lancashire (Station Master) was married before and he could be the father I'm looking for.

Someone mentioned the DNB, gave you got a copy of the entry there. I can send if you wish, I don't like posting copyright material.
You can get online access to the DNB through many libraries and if you can't through your own then several libraries give membership to anyone in the UK.

Thank you Barbara, I had found them on the 1841.
I think Thomas must be Richard senior's father. I also think Richard must have been married before, as he didn't marry Sarah until 1835.

You're doing well! As it happens I am deliviering the Scout Post to Bay Horse area (again) this afternoon, I will look out for the old station building. Maybe you have found this link to Bay Horse area history? I'll put it up for the delight of other rootschatters anyway
http://www.bayhorse-lancaster.co.uk/ (click on 'history' link on the left of screen if necessary).
Mr Wadeson the station master gets a mention in the story of the train that nearly ran into the stationmasters house. When I read this I recognised it from my childminding days as a story adapted by the Rev. Awdry in the Thomas the Tank Engine stories

Thank you for that Barbara. Very interesting to read. I will show that to Richard Wadeson's descendents. Adds a little bit more to the tree.
