In 1760, various HALE descendants were deforciants in a squabble over land with Thomas HALES, who won the argument (Chapman Collection, ORO - Phillips family papers)
I have not heard of Thomas before and don't know who he is. I presume he is related to the HALE families in Kingham as he won the family tiff. The only reference I have seen to him is in the archives at ORO in regard to the final concord over the land. Can anyone give me some supplementary info about him? Anything at all would be of help.
Thank you.

I am curious if you have found any more info on your PHILLIPS Kingham query? I am searching for the family of PHILLIPS at Kingham, and hope to learn if many Phillips were landowning or just residing in the area known as Kingham?
I have found a list of Oxfordshire Landowners of 1873, which names only one PHILLIPS of Kingham. I have found other references to a Sir George, a John, and a William who appear to own land there. What I cannot find is if they are a line of descent, or if there are more than one property owned by this name in the Kghm area.
Maybe you have come up with some leads ... or photos etc. -- Mel

Hello Mel
I am afraid that I don't have any Phillips info, however, have you looked at the Oxford Records Office catalogue? (Google: National Archives England. Search for Phillips, Oxfordshire). The Chapman Collection was donated by the Phillips, who were local solicitors, I think. I believe that you would possibly find more info from the records office. They must have been quite a substantial family to have an archive worth donating to the county; the archive itself dates from around 1600 so, presumably, there are Phillips connections back as far as then, although if by female marriage, the name may be different. Probably worth a look if you have not already done so. It may also be worth posting a message on the Oxfordshire rootsweb list; fantastic amount of Oxon knowledge available on there and someone will always help you, much like rootschat. I still don't know who Thomas HALES is though!
Good luck and best wishes with your search.

Good luck, Pat. Have you tried some fancy Google innovative searches, just playing with words? You never know what can turn up! I will follow up with the records you mention. A good lead ... - Mel
