I am trying to trace my Godfather with the surname either Joveish or Yoveish. Does anyone know if this is a Jewish or Polish name please?

Yes briefly, but no results possibly because I do not know enough about him. Also tried genesreunited and freebmd.

Have you found him in 1901 census? Any idea of first name and approx. age?

I think he was similar age to my late father so he would have been born about 1926. His first name was Edward. I know it's a long shot but I have only recently come across his name in a "Baby book" of mine.

Many churches only allow menbers of their religion to be godparents- is this a possiblity? Also, many Christian churches that have godparents/sponsors for children would not have allowed a non-Christian to have particpated in a baptism.

Yes I did think of that and as I was baptised a Roman Catholic it therefore seems unlikely that he was Jewish. I have looked under Polish surnames but this Joveish or Yoveish is not listed there.

Until fairly recently I think godparents to a Catholic child had to both/all be Catholic themselves. Any reason why you think the name might be Polish?

Hello Ahadowey, and Vella I think you could have a possible link I have details of the same persons Medal card here :- below, which may give more information
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6268906
It is not too expensive to obtain detail record. and might be worth a try.
Kind Regards Raphael UK & Germany

The London Gazette of 21 March 1958 has the following entry under naturalizations:
Yoveish, Konstantin (known as Constant Wallace) ; Lithuania ; Tailor; 83, Lewisham Way, London, S.E.14. 4 February, 1958.
This would appear be the same man who served in WWI.

Thankyou Gardener and JustinL
I have looked up deaths after 1984 on Ancestry but nothings comes up, however, I think now the name was spelt with a Y.
JustinL, Konstantin might well be Edward's father as there is south east London/East Kent connection between the families.
