I'm trying to find the birth of my gtx2 grandfather, John Jones. On the census he gives Ironbridge as his place of birth. He married in 1885 and on the cert. it gives his age as 30. His parents were Henry Jones and Ann Mager. I've looked on the FMB but am not sure which registration district Ironbridge is. I'd have thought Madeley, but when I click on Mademey it doesn't mention Ironbridge. As John Jones is a VERY common name I don't know which entry to choose.
I'd be really grateful for any help or suggestions.
Regards
French

Hi French,
at least you know his parents' names. If you can narrow the choice down a bit, the local registrar should be able to check parents for you - could also check which district Ironbridge comes under. I would also have said Madeley, as it includes Benthall which is very near Iron Bridge
Telford & Wrekin Register Office is located at The Beeches, 29 Vineyard Road, Wellington, Telford, TF1 1HB and is open Monday to Friday 9.30am - 12.30, 2.00pm - 4.30pm. Phone: 01952 382444 email: register.office[at]telford.gov.uk (you need to type @ for [at] )

Thank you for your replies and the address Barbara.
Yes, Suz, that's my John Jones in 1901. I can't find him on the 1891 census where he should be with his wife, Sarah and son John (my grandad). In 1881, there's a John Jones born Ironbridge living in Staffordshire. That might be him.
In 1861 he and his family are living with Jon's grandmother in Wenlock. John is given as being 4 years old. He has a brother, Samuel who is 2 on the census.
I really would like to find out what happened to the family. After 1871 father, mother and brother seem to disappear. If I can find out exactly where he and his brother were born maybe I'll have more luck finding them in later years.
I know that Henry Jones was born in Kiddiminster, father Samuel, a weaver but otherwise that's all I have on the Jones family. John's wife Sarah Payne, born abt. 1860, died in 1900 and I haven't found her on any census. Her baby son, Samuel, born 1900 was fostered out. John remarried (I don't know who to) and John was left to fend for himself, Samuel was sentfrom Lancashire to an orphanage in Dawly and both brothers died before they were 30. One in the war and the other in a pit accident.
That's all a bit off track. Hope I haven't bored yo.

The more information you have, the better (and more interesting) it is for us to search.
I would think John's birth was reg madeley -as in 1861 and 1871 census address is given as ironbridge and reg district is madeley.
Back to searching
