Request a lookup in the 1851 census for Richard Chapple, born about 1824 in Chittlehampton, Devon.   According to freeBMD he is still single and does not marry until 1852.

Hi Tazzie, thanks very much - that explains a lot  Grin   They married the following year and moved to Allerford, North Somerset where he was a shoemaker and Post Master.
