Andrew Gall bc 1825 Missing!
« on: Monday 17 December 07 01:49 UTC (UK) »

I have a query about Andrew Gall bc. 1825 father of Andrew Gall bc. 1852 in Crawfordjohn Lanarkshire.

The mother of Andrew Gall bc. 1852 is listed in the 1861 Census for Gilkerscleugh, Crawfordjohn is Betty Milligan bc. 1823, also in the Census is Agness Braidwood bc. 1843 in Crawfordjohn, daughter of Betty Milligin.

The 1851 Census for Gilkerscleugh, Crawfordjohn lists Betty as Elizabeth Hunter daughter of Agnes Milligan bc. 1775 in Douglas, Lanarkshire. Also in the Census is Agnes Braidwood and also Janet Thomson bc. 1848 in Crawfordjohn also a daughter of Elizabeth Hunter.

I don't think that Betty ever married Andrew Gall as the death certificate for Betty is:
Elizabeth Milligan alias Hunter (Betty) b. 1822 d. 28th April 1863 aged 40yrs at Gilkerscleugh, Crawfordjohn a spinster.

So What happend to Andrew? Undecided

Thanks in anticipation

Ian

Hi Ian

This could be him in 1851:

But can't so far find him on 1861. Have checked SP and no apparent death 1855-1861. Have also done a very quick check of the passenger lists and so far no trace of him emigrating.

Will keep looking.

Cheers

Ellen.

Hi again Ian

This could very well be your man - in 1857 in Minneapolis!

He is with a wife, Flora, age 23, and a baby son, William C Gall, 4 months.

Andrew and Flora are born Scotland and baby William is born Minnesota.

Will investigate the passenger lists further and see if I can find them.  Did a quick check for a marraige on SP, but no sign in Scotland 1855-1857.

Regards

Ellen.

There's also this chappie on the 1881 in Ontario in Canada, which could be the same Andrew, but no further details are available online for this one.

Yep, looks like Andrew, Flora and family moved from US to Canada in 1865. Here they are in the 1901 Canada:

NB - added later, William is shown as son, Sarah as daughter in law, and Edith and Donald as grandchildren.

And Andrew is still alive in 1911:

On the 1901, Andrew gives his date of birth as 19 June 1827, Scotland, and Flora as 21 May 1832, Scotland. Andrew is a farmer.

On this 1911, it gives his immigration year as 1852 - wonder if thats when he originally went to the US.

Assuming this is the right Andrew (and since there appear to be no other suitable candidates in the UK, it looks likely), we are now looking for death info. Don't know if we can get death info for Canada on Ancestry, but I'll give it a go.

Well done Ellen  Grin  Grin

Check this
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GALL/2001-02/0981476920

Looks like one of the children of Andrew GALL the younger (b 1852) went to Canada too. This posting is from a descendant of the same Andrews

Bullseye - got his death Ian  Smiley

Andrew Gall died (of old age), age 86, at Connington, Brock, Ontario on 10th January 1914 (dob. 19 June 1827).

His father was William Gall, his mother's maiden name was Dodds (no christian name given).

Informant was William Gall, presumably his son.

Woohoo!!
And look at this one!
Seems the Andrew GALL in Ontario whose wife was Flora  was born in Killarrow, Islay, Argyll on 19 Jun 1827 and but it says died in 1912 (obviously a mistake about the death year)

And there is a marraige on SP for William Gall and Agnes Dodds, Crawfordjohn, 30 Apr 1822.

Wonder if the person above got the place of birth wrong too?

I'm thinking the same, it Seems Flora (McFAYDEN ) certainley was from there....a number of web hits on them (a couple by the same person of that previous link)

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SCT-ISLAY/2004-02/1076173918

http://freepages.nostalgia.rootsweb.com/~tlarson/fam01311.htm
http://www.chouston.f2s.com/Alltrees/dat1095.html

The last one does put a ? against Andrew's place of birth.
