Any surviving service records are at the national archives in Kew, London but there is not a very high success rate I'm afraid.  Please read their leaflet "British Army Soldiers papers 1914-1918 ........"

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm

You will need the "getting started" section and then "index to research guides"

You may find details of his final resting place on the Commonwealth War Graves Site http://www.cwgc.org

He may be mentioned in the publication "Soldiers Died" which is now available on CD.  I expect that somebody on here has access to it if you ask for a look up.

Have you enquired at the local library etc. where he was last living?  Sometimes they collected information on local lads both during and after (for memorial purposes) the war and info was often published in the local newspapers of the time also.

You should be able to find his medal roll at least (if it is not too a common name) - they are online at the National Archives also but there is not much more detail on the roll than what is in the index.  Maybe date of enlistment and actual medals awarded:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm

see "search our collections" and then "documents online"

If your ancestor received a meritous award or was promoted then he may be mentioned in the London Gazette:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm

I hope this is of some use

Good luck

Go to Commonwealth War graves commision website and you will find the person there if he died in ww1. I found my uncle on there and he was killed in ww2. You can even print off a certificate and it will tell you where they are buried with instruction on how to get there. Good luck.
with kind regards Donna
