pauper in inclation, liff road,wellburn,dundee
« on: Monday 17 December 07 09:49 GMT (UK) »

I have my relatives highlighted as being in the below address (from a listing on the Kirkcudbright board " Owen and Margaret Lynch 1851 Census Village of Rhonehouse 869)"

1871 Census
owen lynch age 60. b. ireland. pauper in inclation?
margaret lynch age 64. b. ireland. pauper in inclation.
address. liff road,wellburn,dundee.
looks like some sort of workhouse or establishment like that.

On google it would appear if this establishment is still in place today?? Would this be correct from those of you who know your way around Dundee?

I don't think you can assume that a care home now is the same as an institution in the mid-19th century. (Is it actually 1851 or 1871?)

Is this someone else's transcription? If I were you, I'd look at the original and check that the transcription does actually say that. If you can't decide, post the image here as an attachment and see what people think about it.

You can download the original for a modest fee at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Being new to these Boards I obviously did not make my posting very clear in the way I have written my query. Please allow me to clarify:

I did not assume that the address was the same as in 1871. The sentence was posed more as a question, as the address shown in 1871 was identical to, and the role of the establishment appeared similar to, the address and nature of the establishment in 2007 via a Google search. The URL I attached to the original post will confirm this contention.

The correct date is 1871 as highlighted in red combined with the census information from that period. The original inquiry concerned the 1851 census and the reply I received highlighted the information I have posted in Red from the 1871 census.

The transcription was brought to my attention by a poster on the Kirkcudbright board. I then checked for myself at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and confirmed the information I was dealing with was authentic for my purposes

Once again thank you for your assistance and helpful comments

Thanks Sally. Yes it does help.

It looks as though Owen and Margaret Lynch (my relatives) finished their days there. I am in the process of trying to find when they passed on as I am a direct relative of their second born - Edward Robert Lynch, born in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbright in 1833. He came to Australia into Sydney in 1856 and here I am in 2007 tracing him backwards to your area in Scotland.

I am surprised they went into a catholic home as the catholic side of my family comes from my mother, Ryans from Ireland.

Have a happy Christmas from Cairns, Queensland Australia where the temperature at present is 34 degrees in the day and 24.5 degrees at night - another hot Christmas coming up.
