Woodelf,
I have found the marriage of Edward to Gwen.....but Edward is given as Edward Philip, not Edward Pigeon. Father is correct though. Do you have/want the marriage?
An Edward Philip McGrath's death was in the Advertiser newspaper in 1999.

Oh, bummer! They definitely married though, but not in NSW. Mmm.. unless he had a different middle name too? They married before 1940 because he enlisted in the Navy and his wife is Linda Jean. I'm only making this more difficult for you, aren't I?

The only SA marriage between 1917 and 1937 with father given as August Bede MCGRATH is that of Edward.
There were no marriages for a "Linda Jean" to a McGrath in the Vic index......
Maybe he married between 1937 and 1940 in SA.....

OK... I know my g-grandmother Eileen Margaret McGrath m Kenneth Archie Donald McKinnon 26 Jul 1930 in Saints Church, Eastry St Norwood, South Australia. I just assumed that seeing as she married in SA, the rest would too perhaps. They probably did but as you said not in the that specific timeframe. Would you by any chance know if Old Modbury Cemetery exists anymore (because I can't find it)?

I saw the record a while ago on the National Archives and now it's not working . But this is what I saw; yes I saw that it said just Linda. It struck me as odd but I didn't follow it up. Elfie

Well, There are ways to follow it up, but for now, I wonder if you should consider that the marriage may not have taken place at all.
She does not appear to be, Linda McGrath on the enlistment documents which were taken by 'dictation' from the candidate at the depots..
If she were Mrs Linda McGrath in 1939 when he enlisted I think her full name would have shown.
In my experience with these records too, when a marriage takes place during service, the summary, [which is what I am viewing] is altered to show revised next of kin. He was discharged in 1951 with the details as shown on the summary. NOK 'Linda'
He had a long navy career.
