Head Stone Inscription Look up PLEASE
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 09:10 GMT (UK) »

I am wondering "IF" by chance anyone maybe going to or near St Michaels , Craig road Cemetery,Dumfries.
I would like to get the inscriptions of 2 people who are buried there.
These people are James Johnstone who died 19/5/1900 & his wife Agnes (maiden name Rogers(on) or Milligan) who died 4 days later

If this is at all possible it would be greatly appreciated

TIA

Hi

I managed a trip to the library today where I managed to find the reading on the headstone you are interested in.

It reads as follows:

In loving memory of
James Johnston, carter for 29 years to the Dumfries Police Commissioners, who died 19.5.1900 aged 74 years.

Also Agnes Rogerson, his wife, who died 24th May 1900, aged 75 years.

Also James Johnstone Beattie, grandson of the above and son of Ebenezer Beattie, who died 26th September 1903, aged 11 years.
"There's a Happy Land"

Also the above Ebenezer Beattie, who died at 61 Glasgow Street, Maxwelltown, 18th June 1907, aged 59 years.

Also Sarah C. Beattie, wife of the above Ebenezer Beattie, who died at 87 College Street, 28th January 1941 aged 83 years.

In the death they were not divided.
______

There is a lot of information there.  I hope it all fits in with what you might have.

I have taken a note of where the stone should be so hopefully I can get a photo of it.

Regards

Betty

After two visits to the library and two visits to the cemetery I finally found the grave stone.  The plan I mentioned was for the new part of the cemetery.  It was just a case of systematically walking up and down the rows of grave stones.  It was late in the day before I found it so I will pay another visit, weather permitting, at the weekend to see if I can improve on it.

This is the best I could do today.

Betty

I know you have not asked for this but I had a look at the old newspaper indexes in the library.

Extracted from Dumfries and Galloway Standard dated 22nd June page 5 column G under deaths.

BEATTIE on the 18th inst. at 61 Glasgow Street, Maxwelltown, Ebenezer Beattie, the beloved husband of Sarah Beattie aged 59 years, deeply regretted.

There are another two entries in 1903.  One is an article about the death of James Johnstone Beattie who died under cloroform.

The other is probably his death notice.

Would you like me to send these or do you already have them.

I would be very greatful if that could be arranged.
You maybe correct about "Death Under Chloroform" regarding his son
