Moffat Railway accident
« on: Sunday 11 November 07 19:20 GMT (UK) »

I have just been given a little information regarding an ancestor of mine who was killed in a Railway accident in Moffat. Unfortunately I don't have a year to go on which might be a big stumbling block.
Lewis Price was born in 1892 Denbighshire, North Wales. He had a family and became a Train Driver. He travelled all over the place. He apparently was killed when his engine failed, got out to check what was wrong and was hit by a train on the other line.
Can anyone give me any hints/tips on how I might at all be able to find out anything at all on this accident please.

Regards

Hi Ev,
Sorry don't know anything really, I was only told this story on Saturday. I'll have to do some looking around for dates of his children.
Thanks

Moffat has a museum which has stuff on display about railway accidents. I don't have the web address handy but you should be able to search for it successfully. They are generally keen to collate stories like this.  The other things is to establish where the accident occurred. Moffat was on a short branch line from Beattock, about 2 miles. The accident might have been on this, but could also refer to an accident on the main line near Beattock, but where near Moffat was given instead.

I have some more information regarding this railway accident. Name of person was an Irwin/Eurwyn Price, it was his father who was Lewis! The accident occurred on the LMS line near Lockerbie during the war 1942/43. Is this anywhere near Moffat at all, or are we way off the mark?

I've had a search in a railway atlas, and it suggests that Moffat was on the Caledonian Railway at that time. (Ayreshire nowdays).

That's not a million miles from Lockerbie, which was also on the CR.
