Still wondering if your dates are correct
1871 census shows a margaret Knowles b. c.1862 Milnthorpe -with parents Robert and Ellen
1871 also shows margaret Knowles b. c. 1829 Hugill - parents Roger/margaret -this margaret fits with your detils for Margaret Greenhow-as she was b. c. 1829 Grasmere!
Have you got the daughters the wrong way around??
I didn't know margaret married - what other info do you have -and do you want the full 1871 census for margaret and Roger and family??

We can rule out margaret Knowles b. Hugill -daughter of Margaret and Roger -as she was still unmarried in 1901 and living with her father and some siblings -strangley enough in lancashire!!!!

Hi Tracey, Just checked 1871 John Gill and then (I think) found them in 1861, which sheds more light on things 1861 Cleator Cumberland John Gill Head m 36 iron Ore Miner Crosthwaite Margaret wife 38 graystock Mary daughter 9 Graystock Isaac son 8 Crossthwaite Joseph son 6 Crossthwaite Dinah daughter 5 Crossthwaite John son 2 Crossthwaite Margaret 10mths Cleator Abraham Greenbow Lodger 22 Graysock William Jones Lodger 21 Cornwell RG9 3951 39 26
I think lodger Abraham Greenbow is really Abraham Greenhow -margaret's brother

Marriage Dec qtr 1850 Cockermouth on same page John Gill Margaret greenhow 25 95
Now this causes a little mystery!
1851 it seems John and margaret were living apart and Margaret was going by her maiden name !!! Possibly it is because margaret was working as a servant and her employer hadn't changed her name (or didn't know she was married??) Daughter mary arrived 1851 -so maybe margaret stayed on at work until she had the baby Also John was living with his parents -although I suspect his mother was possibly his stepmother
Maybe these census will explain my suspicions!!!
1841 Mungrindale Greystoke beck Side John Mandate head 30 Farmer Elizabeth 28 Joseph 8 Sarah 7 Isaac 5 Jane 3 Elizabeth 1 Robert Wilkinson 16 ag lab MARGARET GREENHOW 13 ag lab John Headlop 33 ag lab Margaret Harding 21 ag lab all b. in county HO107 172 7 9
Then think this is margaret's family
1841 Hungrisdale Greystoke Richard Greenhow 33 ag lab Mary 40 John 19 Sarah 12 Elizabeth 10 Dinah 8 Abraham 5 John Harrison 41 ag lab HO107 172 6 7
1851 Hukton Hill? Penruddock? Ann parker Head U Inn keeper Greystoke Thomas Parker brother U 58 Master CordwinerGreystoke MARGARET GREENHOW servant U 23 Inn maid Greystoke Robert Simpson servant 14 Sevant of all work Bongate HO107 2426 48 10
meanwhile... waiting for his wife.... 1851 Brett hall newlands Isaac Gill Head M 49 Farmer Crossthwaite Jane wife 37 Brigham John son MARRIED 25 crossthwaite Mary daughter U 17 Crossthwaite William son 7 Crossthwaite Dawson son 5 crossthwaite Tyson son 4 Crossthwaite Jane daughter 1 Crossthwaite Ho107 2434 236 7
interesting!!!

This looks like John with father in 1841 Boad Hole newlands Crossthwaite Isaac Gill 35 farmer John 15 Isaac 10 Mary 9 Sarah Hird 70 Ind Susan Harrison 20 FS all b in county
(on same page there are sevaral Tyson families/family members)
then there is this marriage
Mar qtr 1843 Cockermouth on same page Jane Tyson Isaac Gill 25 63
so it seems jane was John's stepmother -and also explains where the name "Tyson" as a forename originates

This is only my opinion - but the 1841 I gave you with John -father Isaac and then 1851 - the names of John's siblings and half siblings "fit" with what john called his children -especilly the "Tyson" -and John also called a son Isaac- so I think this is a much better bet.
What may have thrown your "new rellie" out is On 1841(I think) Issac was transcribed as Jane !!! Image reads Isaac -but quite difficult to read
If either of you have margaret/John's marriage cert , then that will confirm John's father's name
Be good to hear what you and "new rellie" agree on
