Hello and thank you for your reply,
I have only just come across this info.
Lucy Wise B. 1802 and Thomas Brant B. 1815 from Warfield Berkshire married 1835.
Two of their children Anna Maria Brant B. 1844 and Sally (Lulu) Brant B. 1848 left home and went to London in in 1873.
Annie Marie met George Montgomery and married??? They had 3 children: Paul Montgomery Tom Brant B, 1873 D. 1877 Diana Lucy Humes Montgomery B. 1875 (survived) William Montgomery B. and D. 1877.
These children were born in the work house.
This is the last sentence I have:
Thomas, Lucy and Lulu Brant Annie Maria, William and Paul Montgomery all died between Nov. 1876 and Feb. 1877.
The missing husband was a commercial traveller selling china in China!!!
So I imagine they were in London but I don't know if Annie Marie's parents were in London or if the family had moved back to Berkshire.
That is all the info I have at present any help will be much appreciated, Abiam

This is so sad, isnt it?
From Free death indexes:
Oct Nov Dec 1876 Annie Montgomery age 32 Chelsea 1a 181(no middle name) and William Montgomery aged 0 Chelsea 1a 181
so ANnie and baby die in London
looks like little Paul goes to live with grandparents and takes the germs with him:
Jan Feb Mar 1877
Paul Montgomery age 3 Berkhampstead 3a 282 9no middle names) and Thomas Brant age 62 berkhamstead 3a 282 and Lucy Elizabeth Brant age 74 (was she really 12 yrs older than husband?) Berkhamspead 3a 181 (death probably before her husband and grandsons as on page before)
also - cant find Sally or Lulu, but there is a Sula Brant Oct/Nov/Dec 1876 Lambeth age 27 - is that her?

There is a birth for a William Montgomery Dec Q 1876 in Chelsea, so perhaps it was not smallpox but a death related to childbirth for William and his mother.

Thank you so much for all that info. So it looks as though the Grandparents were in Berkhampstead.
As you say such a sad story. This all arrived this morning from an unexpected source in Australia so I am very pleased to have it sorted out.
I would still be interested in reading more about the smallpox in London at that time. In my ignorance I thought it the worst of it was over by then.
Thanks again, Abiam

Lizdb As I said this has only just come to me today and the sender is in Australia. As there were some actual dates maybe she already has certs, she says she has papers..... I shan't be pursuing certs for the family as they are fairly distant unless I win the lottery! Regards, Abiam

There is something here about the 1871 outbreak and hospitals. http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/ConNarrative.68/chapterId/1649/Containing-smallpox-in-Victorian-London.html
Smallpox wasn't really wiped out until the 1960s see Wikepedia
