Hi David
Thanks for checking those - the amendment of Radolph to Ralph further confirms that the this is the same chap who married Alice NICHOLLS in Southill 31 OCT 1605 and that he is the Ralph NEWELL buried 26 Aug 1640 in Clifton. Ann NEWOLD dau of Ralph baptised 5 Dec 1604 remains a bit of an anomaly being before the marriage.
Hopefully someone will be able to check the Sutton transcripts at some point. Whether this will in anyway help add weight to my supposition that the George and Elizabeth having children in Sutton are George Newall and Elizabeth Arnell married Clifton 30 NOV 1665 is probably unlikely!

As expected, nothing extra in the transcript for the Southill marriage. Odd that Ann Newold took Ralph's surname 10 months before his marriage. Not so odd though if the burial of Ann Newold in Clifton on 15 Dec 1604 were his first wife and he then remarried in Southill, but there's no indication in Clifton transcript to show if she was his wife or his daughter born a few days earlier.
There's a Thamar Newell dau of Ralph baptised in Southill on 29 Sept 1606

Hi David
Thank you for checking that out. I was wondering if Ralph had been married before nothing on the IGI but since most parishes don't start till 1602 that is no great surprise. There are a couple of things pointing towards the Ann dying being the baby daughter rather than wife - there is no marriage I can see for Ann in Clifton (or elsewhere in right time frame) and Ralph and Alice have another daughter Ann baptised Sep 19 1618 (not that that means anything!). Actually the only marriage I can see for a likely daughter of Ralph is Grace in 1638.

I don't agree that most parishes don't start until 1602. The majority of Beds parishes - 74 out of 131 - on the IGI start before 1600 and there are more eg Clifton, where the IGI starts at 1602 but the transcript starts earlier (the IGI isn't taken from the transcript).
BTs started in 1598 and I suspect that this might be the reason for a number of parishes not starting until 1602- the PR has been lost and the IGI is taken from the BT
Clifton PR Transcript 10 Oct 1604 Marriage Ralph Newold & Ann Broune
That explains everything! Except why it's not on the IGI - which is taken from another transcript according to the source call notes for that batch
What a quick marriage - married on 10 Oct, baby baptised on 5 Dec, mother buried on 15 Dec. Matched, hatched and despatched in two months.

Hi David Thanks everso for finding that marriage ( and for sorting me out on my rather sweeping statement about start of most Beds parishes on the IGI )
I have another even quicker marriage - David Saunders married Hannah Bean 12 Oct 1862, Hannah Saunders (my g grandmother who married Robert Carver over on the left) born 12 Nov 1862, Hannah Saunders senior died 29 Nov 1862 - very sad.

Jan,
From the Sutton parish registers; the 4 baptisms & marriage as per your opening post reveal no additional information. However the burial says that George Newold was a blacksmith.
But staying in Sutton other Newold/Newall entries are as follows.
13 Jan 1670 Marriage of Edm Hemings to Ann Newold
10 Nov 1605 burial of Wm Newell 24 Jul 1668 burial of Mary, daughter of George & Eliz Newold/Newall 29 Sep 1673 burial of Eliz, wife of George Newold 16 Apr 1674 burial of Eliz, daughter of George & Eliz Newold 4 May 1704 burial of Eliz, wife of George Newold 8 Nov 1720 burial of Cath, wife of Thomas Newel 15 Nov 1725 burial of Thomas Newold, blacksmith 8 Nov 1727 burial of Grace Newold, widow
Also noticed on Wrestlingworth PR, its in same book as Sutton; 24 Aug 1690 baptism of Eliz, daughter of George & Faith Newell
regards John

Thanks everso for all that John
This George confirmed as a blacksmith too and a possible brother Thomas which is exciting as it back-ups my belief that this George was the one baptised Cople 1638. Fantastic! More burrowing to be done.
