Good morning Darren.
Well it seems we have a link -my grt grt grandfather was also David Underwood . He married Elizabeth Favell, they had a daughter Elizabeth who married 1= Albert Green and then2= Sydney Simpson. Elizabeths son Walter was my grandad. So far they have all confused the hellout of me,more than one wife/housekeeper. I also believe Jane /Letitia to be one and the same by changing name prehaps it seemed more acceptable to marry. My family are still in Leighton Buzzard and I am in Milton Keynes. Are you all still local?
Will await reply cousins.

I think I am the one Darren is referring to, but I feel somewhat inadequate in the face of all that foregoing knowledge!
John Elkerton and Hannah Ashby were my ggg grandparents, and while I know a considerable amount of scandal about some of their descendants (which I am prepared to share with anyone who has a legitimate interest!), I know almost nothing about them and absolutely zilch about their forebears. Can anyone help me out?
I was born and brought up in Heath & Reach, my father was born at Sheep Lane (Potsgrove) and my grandfather at Battlesden. Like Susan, I went to school in Leighton Buzzard many years ago and I still go to visit two or three time a year to tidy my parents’ grave at St Leonard’s churchyard in Heath. Yes, Leighton has changed as Tracy says, but I can still stand by the cross, look down the High Street and imagine it as it was in the 1950s without too much difficulty. In spite of the plague of estate agents, many of the shops still retain their original name and/or trade, and there is still a small-market-town atmosphere about it.

Good morning Clive. Great to hear from you . Well as you know from this thread things have been getting interesting , for such a small place Potsgrove and Battlesden are creating some eye openers. We have found a marriage of Thomas Underwood to Mary Allentinex 28/12/1833 which looks as though it should be Elkerton copied from PR's. Thomas's father was Thomas Underwood and he married Edith Rewallyn/Rewallin . I have only followed my direct line to date but I have access to ancestry and will be pulling of details with renewed interest.
Best Wishes

Hello Tazzie, thanks for the welcome. Also hello Clive, fancy seeing you here!
Letitia was clearly baptised with that name, and was also named as such in the 1861 census. I suspect that Jane was some kind of nickname in the 1851 census. I'm sure that "housekeeper" was just the polite way of saying "living in sin"!
It's interesting that the marriage registration you have found lists Mary as Allentinex. On the IGI, there is a record for Thomas Underwood marrying Mary Allcurtin in Battlesden. Allcurtin is close enough to Elkerton as far as I'm concerned. The date is 20/12/1833 on IGI - very similar to 28/12/1833 and probably just a problem with the text being difficult to read.
Likewise, the IGI record I've got for his father Thomas lists his wife as Edith Rewalling, and from the IGI I've got back another 4 generations from Edith, with surnames West, White, and Downe, all in Ottery St. Mary.
Regards Darren

I forgot to answer your question about being local...
My wife's grandmother was born and grew up in Leighton Buzzard. Then when she married, they moved in Luton. My wife and family lived in Luton until 1975, when they then moved to Bristol. My wife and I live in Berkshire.

Hi,
I would like to contact "heathen" aka Clive re his ggg grandparents. I may be able to cast light on their forbears, and have a conundrum to resolve re their descendants that has not been resolved by this thread (so far).

Hi Don....
You have been busy well done.
I did not know about the fist possible marriage for Letitia to a John Norwood so will have a look into the family there as well .
Have done little more to this line as I found a major error in a line that was sent to me on my fathers side and have just paid out big time for all the relevent certs.
Best wishes to you for New Year
