Anyone know anything about this lot?
« on: Tuesday 18 December 07 08:28 GMT (UK) »

Amongst my great grandmother's papers I've found a letter dated 1956 from South Africa from a Jack Cobb, informing her of his father's death. He never mentions his father by name, but since my great-grandma's married name was Cobb this Jack must have been the son of her husband's brother Andrew.

Andrew was born in Perthshire and I have him on the 1901 census as unmarried, so he must have married after this date and left for South Africa. There's no marriage certificate on Scotlandspeople, so I think he may have married in South Africa. According to the let Jack was born about 1908 and his brother Albert 1915. There are a number of sisters too, but as he says in his letter "you know how women are about their ages." Jack also says he has two sons.

Trouble is, I'm not massively sure about how to go about researching South Africa at all, or even if it's possible. Can anyone help me trace this line?

A good place to start is the SA National Archives Index (NAAIRS) at www.national.archives.gov.za/

If the individual/s you're looking for died in SA, a deceased estate file containing, among other documents a Death Notice, (not the same as a Death Certificate), would be informative.

Should you be new to NAAIRS searches, there are introductory tips available on the site to help you navigate.

You might also like to read the Beginners Guide at www.genealogyworld.net which gives an overview of sources for SA research.
