I am trying to find a baptism of a Richard William Guest , born Wolverhampton.  Unfortunately I can only find him on cenus returns after his marriage (He was in the army for some time and may have been overseas.) and cannot find a definite birth entry.  He appears to have been born between 1845-1855.  (Age varies on census) All I know is that his father's name was George.

If anyone can offer advice I would be grateful.

You will have to give us the details you do have. There isn't a Richard Guest c 1844 listed on the 1851 census at all in Staffordshire. There are only 7 listed in the country (on soundex) none with a father called George

Let me know what details you have and I will give it another crack

Sorry to take so long to reply.

Richard Guest has various ages.  I found something a while ago, which I have mislaid, which made me think 1845.  However someone else has given me more info.
He joined the army and I have him in the army in 1881 giving age as 27.  Which would give birth of 1853/54.  On 1891 it says 38, on his marriage in Somerset in 1885 he says 31.  His army documents say DOB 4/6/1851.  We cannot find him with a George on previous census, only have the name on his marriage cert.  His wife was a lot younger than him so he may have lowered his age for the marriage.
In 1861 in Wolverhampton there is a Richard, aged 10, with a grandmother.

All very confusing.

In 1881 we have at "The Raglan Barracks" St Aubyn Devonport Devon

Richard Guest b 1854 Wolverhampton Sergent (single)

Strangly the listing on Ancestry only gives him but if you look at the census sheet it lists a lot of other people in the barracks with him plus if you go back through the pages it lists people in the marriage quarters. It looks like the Light Infantry

Ref RG11 Piece 2208 Folio 95 Page 5

Just realised I have posted what you already know. There isnt anything coming up in 1871 or 1861 in Wolverhampton or Devon for him as you said just that one Richard with his grandmother in 1861

There is a death for a George Guest on FreeBMD 2/4 1859 Wolverhampton (no age listed)

I wonder if his father was also an army man and thats why we cant find him listed? Maybe he was posted abroad in the earlier censuses

Only thing listed close for a birth is a Richard 1/4 1851 Stourbridge
