Thanks for the ad Pam.  For those that don't know the site is a free site where people can post transcriptions of their wills with an email link back to them.  It started initially with people on the Cumberland list and as grown steadily.  Due to time constraints and other problems no work as been done on it in a while but hopefully now I can get back to it.  So if you wish to share your will feel free to visit the site http://wills4all.netfirms.com or if you have a web site please feel free to link to my site.

Over the years I've collected many wills and admons, but my most treasured, is the will of my ancestor John Edgson of 1586/7.  Although only a copy, his signature from the time of Elizabeth I, is still clear to this day.

"In the name of the eternalle God amen, the xvth daye of October in the xxixth yeare of the Raigne of our Soveraigne Lady Elizabethe by the grace of god of Englande ffrance and Irelaynde Queene defendoure of the Faythe etc. wittnessethe that I John Edgson of Langham in the Countye of Rutlande husbandman Beinge in Bodye sicke and weake but in mynde whole and sounde and of perfecte Remembraunce Thanks be gyven to the almightye doe make this to be my last will and Testamente in this forme and Order..."

Hey Mobo,

That is wonderful - what did he leave?

You are so fortunate to come from such a rich pedigree!

Thanks Nigel

Oh,  he just left the usual - money to Peterborough Cathedral & Langham Church, money and animals to his younger children, more money to his middle children, and the whole estate to his wife and eldest son Nicholas.

I've been reading this thread very enviously - people have got some wonderful stuff!!!

Can anyone suggest a good way for us Antipodeans to search for wills?  Obviously, we can't trot into records offices and search as those of you in Britain can.

Hi Marie C,

Pre-1858 wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury are indexed online.  Go to: http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
and click the "Search the wills" link
You can then download the will however long it is on payment of £3.50.  I have done this several times - quality is good for the most part.

Scottish Wills are available to download for £5.00 per will at:
http://www.scottishdocuments.com/content/default.asp
but I think it is going to be combined soon with Scotland's People so watch out for news.  Not all courts in Scotland are available but they are working hard on it.  Again quality is good.

Some record offices have indexes online - Cheshire certainly does and then you can submit an order by e-mail.  The copy is then posted to you.  If you can access any index to find the references and give that to the record office, then most will provide a copy on payment of the fee.  East Sussex have a photocopying order form available online and if you contact any of them by e-mail, I feel sure that they would only be too pleased to help. Wink

Lincolnshire has a postal service for wills.  I got the form on line and gave the call number on the printable form.  Very fast and great copies of 1812 and 1821 wills.

I also have had luck with Scottish documents.  I paid for the wills and saved them.  I found 2 wills on their site.

I just ordered 2 from Essex.  It has been a month but I am sure the mail is slow with the holidays.

So it is possible to do so from overseas.  I have not tried Yorkshire yet (I notice this is an area you are looking).
Good luck!

Thanks, Little Nell and Nutkin!

I have one pre-1858 will that I would like, so will try what you suggested.

If I'm looking for a post-1858 will in London, can anyone suggest a records office I can try for online records?  Is it the FRC or a particular records office?  I am a little confused about searching in London.

Hi Marie

Post 1858 wills/administrations are £5 whether you apply for them in person or by post.  If you are pretty certain that they left a will, you can apply direct

http://www.courtservice.gov.uk/cms/3734.htm

For the £5 you get a copy of the administration and (if there was one) a will.  They will also search a couple of years from the date that you give for no extra charge.

The indexes are at First Avenue House, High Holborn, London and very easy to use - if somebody is going there it is only a 5 minute job to look up the index if you have the year of death.  I believe this is the only full set of indexes.   The index ledgers are produced yearly in alphabetical order in the date that the will was proved so, in some instances,  this can be some years after the death.

Good luck

Thanks Casalguidi  Cheesy

I will see if I can get someone to go there for me.  I do have a couple of relatives over there but can't get them interested in doing anything - still trying.  Don't have the year of death of the person I'm looking for, so someone may have to search through about twenty years.  Hopefully, I'll convince one of these rellies that it won't hurt them to spend an hour or so...

One thought that as just occured to me that hasn't been mentioned yet is the following.  When looking for a will you may sometimes have to search many years after the death of your ancestor.  Will's are dated by the date they go through probate and if there as been any litigation against the will probate may not have been granted till after a court case.

I'd also like to add another source for finding wills are the record offices.  I'm no expert but my experience at Carlisle was great.  They have many years of probate records indexed (on paper not online) and that helped when you don't know the specifics.  I collected all the Lowther wills in the right area and they were all related.

To be fair most people will find the wills they are looking for in the Local records offices or at least the records offices connected to the bishops court for the area they died in.  Be prepared to travel though.  For example some Nottingham Wills are held at York.  A lot of Derbyshire are held at Lichfield.

Just wanted to let fellow will-users know of my success from the other side of the world!  Following advice here, I purchased the 1834 will of my g-g-g-grandfather, Thomas Martin.  It was almost illegible to my eyes, but two lovely Rootschatters helped me decipher it.  I have now put a link to the transcript on my webpage.  It has given me valuable new family information and some things to follow up for more.   Grin

Fired with enthusiasm, I am keen to get a fix on when g-g-grandfather Edward Martin died so that I can follow Casalguidi's advice and apply for this will also.  Regrettably, this is proving very difficult to do!

Thanks, everyone, for help and encouragement!

Great work MarieC!!  Isn't it a wonderful feeling to get a new item of research that your ancestor had a hand in creating.  I think they are even better than census or birth returns!
