Hello Heather,
Firstly may I wish you a very Happy Christmas, although of course you have already had Christmas Day!
Thank you very much for this information but I think there are discrepancies with 'my John Wise'.
I have been given the date of death for John as 11 June 1854 you have 28 January 1952. This would mean that his son Arthur who was born 28 August 1853 was born about 19 months after John's death. Of course there could have been an affair! But on the BISA the father of Arthur is given as John.
I have traced Emily Roebuck Fenton back to the 1871 census to parents Henry R Fenton b. Yorkshire and Emily Fenton B. Sussex with three daughters all born in Surrey and Emily is there aged one.
Also you have John Wise as son of Henry I have him as son of George Wise of Braywoodside Berkshire.
I am very much a novice at all this but I think you have followed Emily Roebuck Fenton as Emily Roebuck. Do let me know what you think of 'my' facts and thank you again for all your work,
Very best wishes, Abiam

Dee, Cando and everyone,
Some great success!
Maddie my 3rd cousin, discovered through Rootschat, has done a lot of searching on the web and found some wonderful information! We now have photo's of the Parkhurst Stables, interior and exterior, where John Wise stayed when he arrived in 1841.
The area which eventually became part of Kungarilla, even Eyre's Flat is mentioned, of which I could find very little. The area at one time was known as Dashwood Gully after G F Dashwood who we believe our Great,Great, Grand Uncle travelled with.
BUT, this is the best bit!!!
John Wise died in 1854 and Maddie has found where he was buried. All we had before this was the date of death. Below is the plaque commemorating those buried at the Tabernacle at Tabernacle Road, Victor Harbour. And there eighth from the top on the left is JOHN WISE 1854. There are photo's of the monolith erected when the little church building disappeared in memory of the Rev Newland and even a sketch of the tiny church erected in 1846
I don't know whether this will be clear enough I hope so. This makes up for having letters which are so faint that we are struggling to read them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those Roots chatters who offered or tried to do something with them. Unfortuntely we don't have access to the originals.
Finally a BIG thank you to Maddie for her patient searching, Abiam

Abiam, that's excellent news for you.
I've just been looking at my Street Directory of Victor Harbor to locate Tabernacle Road. It is actually in the area called Encounter Bay. (And the Harbor part of Victor Harbor is actually spelt without the "u". )
I am wondering if there may be more information in either of the local libraries here.....there is one in Victor Harbor and one in Goolwa, which has an excellent family history room. Next time I am visiting one of them, I shall try to remember to check.

Dee,
It would be great if you could look in the libraries. The thing to find out now is why and how he died so young only 40 with a young wife and two babes. Must have been very hard for her,
Wishing you all a very Happy New Year, Abiam

Hello everyone,
Just to let you know the latest on our saga!
Having sent emails to anyone I could think of and with much help from RC - it has paid off! I was left with wanting to know why he died at 40 and now I know....
John Wise owned land and cattle. He was thrown from his galloping horse whilst mustering cattle near Tonkalilla Beach and severely injured. ( there are so many spellings of this name). A companion ( a Mr Tonkin) got him to the whaling station at Encounter Bay where he died. I assume that must have been by horse and cart which can't have helped.
I now have a photo of John's second son Arthur and his widow Anne's 2nd husband and more about her life.
About 2 weeks ago we didn't even know he went to Australia!
Thanks to everyone once again for your help, Abiam

That's terrific, Abiam! The spelling is now Tunkalilla. The hillsides around there can be very steep......
So glad you have had so much success....
